A Geotab device is installed by matching the harness to the vehicle's connector, plugging or wiring it in, tying it down out of the driver's way, and confirming it reports in MyGeotab. This guide walks each step for every Geotab device family.
A Geotab device is installed in four moves: choose the harness that fits the vehicle's connector, connect the device by plug or by three wires, secure it where nobody will kick it, then confirm in Geotab's tools that it is reporting. The details change by device: a GO10 always rides on a harness, while an asset tracker may have no wiring at all.
Every job starts the same way. Geotab asks for the serial number to be written down and the unit added to the customer's MyGeotab database before it goes in. We also run the vehicle once to confirm no warning lights are already on.
Before any tool comes out, the connector, the power circuits and the harness plan all get checked, which is where most return trips are prevented.
The harness is picked by the connector on the vehicle and the generation of the device. GO10 and GO10 Plus units take the X-series kits; the GO9 family takes the earlier 16-pin style. Our harness page lists the rest.
| Vehicle connector | GO10 / GO10 Plus kit | GO9 family kit |
|---|---|---|
| 16-pin OBD-II, light duty | HRN-XGS16K2-LD | HRN-GS16K2-LD |
| 16-pin, heavy duty | HRN-XGS16K2-HD | HRN-GS16K2-HD |
| 9-pin Deutsch | HRN-XGS09K2 | HRN-GS09K2-A |
| 6-pin Deutsch, older trucks | Use a GO9B instead | HRN-DS06T2-A |
| RP1226 14-pin | Check the X-series list | HRN-CS14T2 or HRN-CS14S21 |
| No usable port | HRN-XCW03K3 | HRN-CW03K3 |
Where a specialty harness has no GO10 version, Geotab offers the short HRN-XBS16A1 bridge. Newer vehicles that run an Ethernet diagnostic network get checked against Geotab's vehicle-specific install notes first, since some need a bypass step on the T-harness.
Each circuit is proven with a multimeter first, because a guess here shows up later as bad trip data.
The whole harness chain must stay within 2 metres, about 6.5 feet, and two T-harnesses may never be joined, whatever their length. Breaking either rule can corrupt data and upset the engine computer. Extra reach comes from a straight extension such as the HRN-BS16S4 or the flat HRN-BS16S4F, counted inside that 2 m budget.
Geotab marks certain harnesses as restricted under CARB rules when they relocate the vehicle's diagnostic connector. For those vehicles a straight harness or a direct plug-in is the compliant route, and Geotab says the GO10 bridge may only be used there when connected straight to the data link connector rather than in a T-harness layout. Any CARB Executive Order label supplied goes in the engine bay near the emissions label.
A GO10 is plugged in through an X-series T-harness whose adapter takes the factory port's place in the dash. Geotab's sequence:
PTO or immobilizer wiring adds the HRN-XGL06S6 I/O harness.
A GO9, GO9+ or GO9B can plug straight into the port; we normally use a T-harness to lift it out of knee range.
The GO9 RUGGED wires in on machine-specific sealed harnesses; leave its gray connector seals in place.
A 3-wire install powers the device straight from the vehicle's electrical system, for machines and trailers with no usable port. It gives location and ignition hours, not engine data.
A GO Focus dash cam mounts high on the windshield and connects to the GO device's IOX port, with the GO device unplugged until the dash cam work is finished.
The GO Focus Pro is the exception on power: it uses its own 3-wire cable with red to ACC and yellow to constant, so each fuse slot gets metered first. See GO Focus and GO Focus Plus pages for model detail.
A GO Anywhere tracker is added in MyGeotab, activated outdoors under open sky, then mounted away from surrounding metal.
IOX modules plug into the expansion port of an unplugged GO device, in a chain, before power is restored.
The IOX-AUXM, IOX-BUZZ and IOX-NFCREADERA pages carry module wiring notes; a GO10 accepts up to five modules.
The device is tied down so it cannot move, kept out of the way of the driver, and given a view of the sky.
An install is verified when the lights settle on their healthy state and Geotab's install tool reports a pass. In MyInstall, a pass means the unit reached the network within 24 hours; on a fail, check the lights, cycle the ignition and press Refresh.
| Device | Healthy result | Light and beep details |
|---|---|---|
| GO10 / GO10 Plus | Solid green LED | GO10, GO10 Plus |
| GO9, GO9+, GO9B | Red, blue and green solid, then ten beeps | GO9, GO9+, GO9B |
| GO9 RUGGED | Three LEDs solid | GO9 RUGGED |
| GO Focus | Solid blue for 15 seconds | GO Focus |
| GO Focus Plus / Pro | Solid green after four to five minutes | Plus, Pro |
| GO Anywhere family | Solid or 15-second fast flash | GO Anywhere, Plus, Next Gen |

Our Field App looks up light patterns and vehicle wiring offline from one search box.
Most failed installs trace back to the harness or the power source.
The device is the easy part. In 35 years of twelve-volt work, the jobs that come back are the ones where somebody skipped the meter or trusted a harness that only looked right. Our wiring database and troubleshooting tab cover the harder cases.
A GO10 starts up in about 60 to 80 seconds and should show solid green shortly after. A GO9 family unit takes roughly ten minutes in good coverage, and GO Focus Plus and GO Focus Pro dash cams need four to five minutes before solid green.
Geotab says not to pull a device from the vehicle it was installed in and put it in a different one. A move is handled as a removal and a new install through the account.
No. A GO9 can plug straight into the port, and a straight harness is the right choice where compliance rules say the diagnostic connector must not be relocated. The GO10 always needs a Geotab harness because of its connector.
Shut the engine off and take the device out. Geotab treats a warning light, a stall or a loss of performance after an install as a reason to remove the unit, and our technicians then check the harness and the vehicle before refitting.
