The GO9B is the device Geotab points fleets to when their vehicles are older than the GO10 was built for. It keeps the full legacy protocol list and adds far more storage and a newer cellular platform.

The GO9B is an updated GO9. It keeps the plug-in format and the long list of vehicle protocols that made the GO9 useful across many model years, then upgrades the parts underneath: 2 GB of onboard storage, a newer LTE platform, support for all four major satellite systems, improved battery sensing and over-the-air GPS firmware updates.
Its role changed when the GO10 launched in April 2026. The GO10 drops some legacy protocols to run faster on modern vehicles, and Geotab recommends staying with the GO9B for vehicles built before the early 2010s. That makes the GO9B the usual choice for older trucks, older vans and fleets whose rosters span decades.
Older heavy trucks. Haulers and dump truck operators running trucks from before the early 2010s keep engine data, because the GO9B still reads J1708 and J1587, legacy protocols that are not part of the GO10's published list.
Municipal fleets with long service lives. Public works departments often keep trucks in service well past ten years. The GO9B lets one device type cover both those units and the newer pickups in the same yard.
Fleets with weak coverage on their routes. Rural delivery, septic and well service crews benefit from the large offline buffer, since trips recorded out of coverage are held and sent later instead of being lost.
Trailers and non-engine equipment. Three-wire installs with intelligent ignition let a fleet track generators, light towers or trailers that have no diagnostic port.

The new X-series harnesses are made for the GO10, whose connector differs from earlier GO devices, so check that GO9B orders are paired with harnesses listed for the GO9 family rather than the GO10 kits. Geotab's install guidance is to cable tie the device and harness to the diagnostic connector on both sides of the harness so nothing works loose. A correct install beeps six times and powers on. If it does not, or if the device would stick out where the driver gets in and out, needs panels removed or needs extra wiring, Geotab calls for a professional install, which is exactly the work our technicians do. Geotab notes that heavy-duty trucks often use a different diagnostic connector than cars and vans, so we confirm the connector on each truck before the install day. For trailers and equipment, the three-wire install relies on intelligent ignition, so test that the device wakes and sleeps correctly before closing everything up.
The GO9B fits fleets with vehicles from before the early 2010s, fleets with a wide age range across their vehicles, and operators who run long stretches outside cell coverage and want a large offline buffer.
Fleets made up mostly of late-model vehicles that want built-in Bluetooth, onboard equipment inputs or last-gasp tamper alerts are better served by the GO10. Equipment exposed to water, dust or pressure washing needs a GO9 RUGGED. We can supply and install the GO9B and help split a mixed fleet between devices.
Because the GO10 does not support some legacy protocols. Geotab itself recommends the GO9B for vehicles built before the early 2010s, so on those vehicles it is the better choice.
It keeps the GO9's role and protocol coverage but adds 2 GB of storage, a newer LTE platform, all four satellite systems, improved battery sensing and over-the-air GPS updates.
Yes. Both report into MyGeotab, and Geotab describes the GO10 as backward compatible with existing accounts. Each vehicle simply needs the device and harness that match it.
For older trucks and long-serving equipment, API Signal brings the GO9B and the right GO9-family harness to your yard and installs it there, whether that means one vehicle or a whole row. Talk to us at 803-513-1009 or request pricing through Get a Quote.
