Geotab Troubleshooting

Most Geotab problems come down to power, a loose connection or weak signal, and the device's own lights usually say which. This guide works through each symptom in order: what it means, what to check first, and when our technicians should come out.

What Is the Fastest Way to Troubleshoot a Geotab Device?

Start with the lights, then the connections, then the signal, and only then suspect the hardware. Geotab's own process blames insecure connections for most issues.

Keep the light code for your device open: GO10, GO10 Plus, GO9, GO9+, GO9B and GO9 RUGGED. Our Field App puts the same light meanings in one search box and works offline.

1. Read the lights 2. Reseat every joint 3. Hard reset 4. Meter port power Still dark or still failing: our technicians on site Work left to right. Loose joints cause most faults. Swap in a known good unit to see if the fault follows it.
The order Geotab's device troubleshooting guide follows, from cheapest check to most involved.

What Does It Mean When a Geotab Device Shows No Lights at All?

A dark unit is almost always not getting power. Geotab lists a dead port, a weak battery, a unit or harness not fully seated, or a failed part.

  1. Push the device and the T-harness fully home at both ends.
  2. Do a hard reset: engine off, unplug the harness from the device and the port, inspect every pin, reconnect, start the engine. A GO9 should give six quick beeps.
  3. With the harness off the port and the engine running, meter the port. On a 16-pin port, ground is pin 4 and power is pin 16. A 9-pin truck port uses A for ground and B for power, and an older 6-pin uses E and C.
  4. No power on the power pin points to a fuse.

Bent pins or a dead port circuit are where our technicians take over.

16-pin OBD-II Pin 4: ground Pin 16: power 9-pin Deutsch Pin A: ground Pin B: power 6-pin Deutsch Pin E: ground Pin C: power Orange ring: ground pin. Yellow ring: power pin. Meter with the engine running.
The three port types and the ground and power pins Geotab names. Pin spots are only a sketch, so go by the numbers and letters molded on the connector.

Why Is a Geotab Device Stuck Flashing Orange, Blue or Green?

A flashing light means the device is still waiting for something: ignition, satellites or a cell tower.

  • GO10 fast orange: weak or no cell signal. Orange flashing twice means weak GPS.
  • GO10 fast green: no ignition seen. White flashing means start-up or a firmware update, so leave it alone.
  • GO9 flashing blue: GPS not latched. Flashing green means the modem has not latched. Flashing red during install is normal.
  1. Wait. GO10 start-up takes 60 to 80 seconds; GO9 setup runs about 10 minutes in good coverage.
  2. Turn the key on and move the vehicle into the open.
  3. Still flashing? Fault 197 on the Faults page means the subscription is suspended or ended.

A light still stuck in good coverage with the key on gets a visit from our technicians.

Why Is a Geotab Device Not Getting GPS?

A GO device with power but no satellite fix usually cannot see the sky. Geotab names blocked sky view, surrounding metal and, rarely, metallic window tint.

  1. Park outside, away from buildings.
  2. Look at trip history.
  3. Check Faults for code 139, poor GPS quality.

A device mounted too deep under the dash needs remounting on a solid surface with the antenna facing up, which our technicians do. Fault 145, GPS antenna unplugged, means the unit comes out and is replaced.

Why Does MyGeotab Show a Device as Not Communicating or Unplugged?

The Asset page usually gives the reason first, so read it before touching the truck. Fault 136 means the unit was unplugged; fault 130 means all power was removed and it restarted, which Geotab links to loose installs, kill switches and power supply problems.

  1. Power cycle the unit.
  2. With add-ons attached, unplug everything except the GO device, then reconnect one piece at a time.
  3. Move the device to a vehicle with working hardware.

The unplugged fault only reaches MyGeotab after the unit is plugged back in. Our technicians remount units out of drivers' reach on a harness.

Why Is a Geotab Device Not Reading Engine Data?

Missing engine data usually means the GO device cannot hold a clean conversation with the engine computer. Fault 147 points to a bad install, harness trouble or device failure, and fault 287 means CAN errors forced the device into listen-only mode.

  1. Confirm the unit is zip tied tight.
  2. Remove any other third-party device sharing the port.
  3. Power cycle, then swap the harness or device.
  4. Confirm the vehicle is supported. Older heavy trucks may need a GO9B for legacy truck protocols.

The harness must match the port. A 9-pin truck port takes a kit such as the HRN-XGS09K2 on a GO10 or the HRN-GS09K2-A on earlier units. Our technicians match it from the harness list.

Why Is the Odometer in MyGeotab Wrong?

The number on the dashboard and the number in MyGeotab can come from different sources, so small gaps are normal.

  1. Check odometer readings under Measurements. Fault 614 means the device switched to another odometer source.
  2. After an engine swap, update the odometer value in MyGeotab, since a new engine can change the reading.
  3. On a GO9 RUGGED, Geotab warns that missing single-wire and medium-speed CAN affects odometer data on some light-duty models.

Our technicians enter the odometer reading at install and re-check it on site when the gap keeps growing.

Why Won't a Geotab Device Stop Beeping?

Constant beeping is usually a mode, a rule or an add-on doing its job, so match the pattern first.

  • Two beeps every 60 seconds: a GO9 still provisioning.
  • Start-up beeps in the first two trips: Geotab's troubleshooting beep mode.
  • Nonstop beeping until a fob is tapped: an IOX-NFCREADERA relay waiting for a valid driver tag.
  • Beeping after the panic wires trip: an IOX-SATIRDv2 alert, which stops once MyGeotab acknowledges it.
  • Beeps while driving: driver feedback rules set in MyGeotab, made louder by an IOX-BUZZ.

Anything else, our technicians check settings and install together.

Why Is a Geotab Dash Camera Not Online?

Open the Cameras tab under Assets first. A new dash cam reads Pending until its first full trip and updates overnight, while Not working means it stays offline, is paired wrong or failed every recent upload.

  1. Read the light. On a GO Focus, flashing red means an LTE, IOX-CAN or Wi-Fi link failed, and solid red means activation failed.
  2. Give a GO Focus Plus or GO Focus Pro 4 to 5 minutes on first power for solid green.
  3. Slow blue on a GO Focus Pro is parking mode; drive the vehicle to bring it back.
  4. Unstable health points to a blocked lens or an open SD card cover.

Pairing faults are on-site work for our technicians.

Why Did a Geotab Asset Tracker Fail Activation?

Trackers usually fail activation for lack of cell service or sky view.

  • GO Anywhere Plus: one orange flash every 15 seconds is weak cell service; two is no GPS. Retry outdoors with the button.
  • Next Gen GO Anywhere: a flash every 15 seconds means weak cell service, and a double flash means no GPS.
  • GO Anywhere: solid red means check temperature and coverage, then hold the magnetic strip back on for five seconds and remove it.

A wired GO Anywhere Plus flashing green after activation is not seeing ignition, which is a wiring check our technicians make with a meter.

Why Is an IOX Add-On Not Detected?

The termination shunt is the first suspect. Each IOX ships with one, and in a chain only the last unit keeps it, zip tied in place.

  1. Install IOX units with the GO device unplugged, then plug it in and start the vehicle.
  2. Check that only the final IOX has its shunt.
  3. Add up the maximum draw of every module. On a GO9 the total must stay under 2750 mA, and fault 487 means IOX power was shut off.

Long chains are worth having our technicians build and verify on site.

Can a Geotab Device Drain a Vehicle Battery?

A healthy GO device draws very little once parked. Geotab lists sleep current of 4.5 mA at 12 V for the GO9 and 10 mA at 12 V for the GO10,.

  1. Look for a Battery Drain exception or fault 135, vehicle battery low voltage.
  2. Read telematics device voltage under Measurements. Geotab says under 12 V can cause brownouts and under 9 V blackouts.
  3. Have the battery and charging system tested.

With add-ons or a dash cam wired in, our technicians check each connection on site.

What Happens When a Geotab Device Is Moved to Another Vehicle?

The device works in the new vehicle, but MyGeotab still ties it to the old one until the record is updated. Geotab's GO9 documentation says not to move the device between vehicles, and its walkthrough for a planned move starts in MyGeotab.

  1. On the old vehicle, choose the unplug option, not replace. The old record turns historic and keeps its trips.
  2. Add the new vehicle using the same serial number.
  3. Expect the device to read the new VIN, recalibrate its accelerometer and start fresh engine values, including odometer.

Our technicians move the unit, swap the harness if the port differs and validate it in one visit.

What Do Fleet Managers Ask Most About Troubleshooting?

What causes most Geotab device problems?

Loose or half-seated connections. Geotab's own troubleshooting process says insecure connections are behind most issues, so reseating and tying down every joint comes before any other test.

Does an unplugged GO device lose its data?

Not right away. Geotab says the device holds its records in internal memory for at least a month without power, and the unplugged fault shows up in MyGeotab once the unit is plugged back in.

Why does the map show a vehicle frozen in one place?

If the vehicle icon turns black and gray, Geotab points to a cellular carrier problem. If it stays frozen but keeps its normal colors, the likely cause is a service outage or server maintenance, and it clears on its own.
