The GO9 RUGGED shows its status with three lights, Power, Com and GPS, that go from flashing to solid as it connects, plus install beeps when an IOX-BUZZ is fitted. Here is every pattern, the wiring and the specs.
The GO9 RUGGED has three status LEDs that Geotab names Power (Engine on after the first install), Com for the cellular modem, and GPS. Each one moves from flashing to solid as the unit finds power, the network and the satellites. Geotab's pages disagree on sound: the install guide lists setup beeps, but the advanced installation document says a RUGGED needs an IOX-BUZZ for beep mode. If you hear nothing, read the lights. Tap any button below to see it and hear what it means.
🔊 The GO9 RUGGED uses lights and beeps. Turn your sound on.
Easy way to remember it: Flashing, still working. Solid, locked in. All three solid, you're done.

Each button plays the pattern on the GO9 RUGGED above, says out loud what it means, and tells you what to do.
| Light | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Power, off | No power detected, or the engine is off | Key on, then meter the three wires |
| Power, flashing | Power found, update still pending | Keep the unit powered until it settles |
| Power, solid | Power found and update complete; later, engine running | No action |
| Com, flashing | Modem on but not connected to the network | Move the machine into stronger coverage |
| Com, solid | Modem on and connected | No action |
| GPS, off | No satellite fix | Check it faces up under open sky |
| GPS, flashing | GPS on, still searching | Wait outdoors |
| GPS, solid | Satellite fix locked | No action |
Geotab's RUGGED pages name the three lights without giving colors, so the animation borrows the standard GO9's red, green and blue as an illustration.
| Beeps | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 6 rapid beeps | Power detected on the first install | Start the machine and let setup begin |
| 2 quick beeps every 60 seconds | Setup still in progress | Leave it running |
| 10 quick beeps | All three lights solid, setup stage complete | Validate in MyInstall |
| Silence | Probably no IOX-BUZZ fitted | Read the three lights |
Once bolted down, the RUGGED asks nothing of the operator. It wakes with the ignition, logs location, engine hours and faults, and stores up to 80,000 records offline until coverage returns. Audible operator coaching needs an IOX-BUZZ or IOX-GOTALK on the gray IOX connector.
Pressure washing is fine thanks to the IP68 and IP69K sealing, as long as the gray weatherproof plugs stay in. When a machine is sold or retired, have the unit removed and the record closed, since Geotab advises against moving a device off the machine it was first fitted to.
The RUGGED uses its own sealed harness family:
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Models | GR9-LTE, GR9-LTM, GR9-3G |
| Status indicators | Three LEDs: Ignition/Power, Cellular (Com), GPS |
| Sound | Beep mode needs an IOX-BUZZ |
| Size and weight | 159 x 122 x 31 mm, 396 g, 1000 mm cable |
| Housing | Polycarbonate, UL 94 V-0, sealed to IP68 and IP69K |
| Antenna | Internal, on the top side |
| Power | 12 V and 24 V systems, 36 V maximum |
| Current at 12 V | 120 mA typical, 250 mA maximum; sleep 4.5 mA (3.0 mA at 24 V) |
| Temperature | -40 to +85 °C |
| Vehicle buses | Legacy OBD, ISO 15765 CAN, J1708/J1587, J1939, secondary CAN |
| Not supported | Single-wire CAN and medium-speed CAN |
| Memory | 64 Mb flash, up to 80,000 logs stored offline |
| IOX power budget | 2750 mA total across chained modules |
All three lights should hold solid with the ignition on, and MyInstall should report a pass. Confirm the top face points skyward on solid structure. On a three-wire job, recheck that red is always live, yellow drops to zero with the key off, and black lands on bare metal. Leave the gray plugs in and tie the harness clear of linkages and pedals. If the unit stayed silent, note whether an IOX-BUZZ was fitted so nobody mistakes a quiet unit for a dead one.
Flashing means still working, solid means locked in, and all three solid means the job is done.
Geotab's advanced installation document says the RUGGED needs an IOX-BUZZ for its beep mode. Without one fitted, silence is expected, so read the three lights instead and validate the unit in MyInstall.
Geotab lists the RUGGED's antenna on the top of the housing and asks for a solid mounting point with a clear line of sight to the sky, so the top face goes up and away from metal covers.
When a RUGGED keeps flashing and never settles, our technicians come to the equipment, trace power, ignition and ground, and correct the mounting or harness on the spot. Phone 803-513-1009 or request a visit through Get a Quote.
