What Is the GO9 RUGGED?

The GO9 RUGGED is a GO9-class tracker inside a much larger, sealed housing. It is rated IP68 and IP69K, which means it is built to keep out dust, survive immersion and stand up to high-pressure washing. The case is two-piece polycarbonate with a UL 94 V-0 flammability rating, and the device is about twice the length of a standard GO9.

Unlike the plug-in GO devices, the GO9 RUGGED connects through weather-resistant connectors and a dedicated set of harnesses. That lets it be mounted outside a cab, on a machine frame or in an engine bay, where a regular tracker would fail.

What Does the GO9 RUGGED Do?

• Survives harsh environments. Testing covers temperature cycling, thermal shock, humidity, salt spray, vibration and shock, the conditions machines face on job sites and farms.
• Reads heavy equipment data. It supports J1939, J1708 and J1587, legacy OBD and CAN, plus a secondary CAN.
• Works on machines without an engine computer. Intelligent ignition detects running state from voltage and movement, allowing a three-wire install.
• Logs hours and health. Curve-based logging of GPS, voltage, accelerometer and engine data helps flag weak batteries and failing alternators or starters.
• Stores data out of coverage. Up to 80,000 logs are held offline, which matters for machines working in remote spots.
• Accepts select IOX add-ons. Supported modules include IOX-BUZZ and IOX-GOTALK, connected through the HRN-RX06S4 harness.

What Do Fleets Use the GO9 RUGGED For?

Construction and yellow iron. Excavators, loaders and dozers can report location, engine hours and fault data, which helps with theft recovery, rental billing and service scheduling.

Agriculture. Tractors and harvesters that sit out in rain and dust can be tracked with a unit made to live outside the cab.

Airport ground support. Geotab lists ground service equipment as a core use, with dedicated harnesses for battery disconnects, Kubota gas engines and Ford EDI tug engines.

Waste, mining, forestry and oilfield. Vehicles that get washed down daily or work in mud and grit need a sealed device and sealed connectors, not a plug-in tracker under the dash.

Who Is the GO9 RUGGED Right For, and Who Should Choose Something Else?

The GO9 RUGGED fits machines and vehicles that are exposed to water, dust or pressure washing, or that need the tracker mounted outside the cab. Heavy equipment, ag machinery and ground support fleets are its home ground.

It is the wrong pick for ordinary on-road vehicles. It is larger, costs more to install and gives up single-wire and medium-speed CAN, which Geotab notes affects some seatbelt and odometer data on certain GM, Fiat, Dodge, Ford Transit and Mazda vehicles. Pickups, vans and road trucks are better served by the GO10 or GO9B. We can supply and install the GO9 RUGGED alongside the standard devices in the same fleet.

What Are Common Questions About the GO9 RUGGED?

Can the GO9 RUGGED be mounted outside the cab?

Yes. Geotab states it can be installed outside the vehicle, and its antennas are internal, so no external antenna is needed.

Will it work on equipment with no diagnostic port?

Yes. A three-wire install with the HRN-RW03K4 kit, combined with intelligent ignition, tracks machines that have no usable diagnostic connector.

Why not use a standard GO9 in a weatherproof box?

Geotab directs installs exposed to liquids, dust or wet cleaning to its RUGGED models, which are sealed and tested for those conditions, including the connectors.
