Geotab HRN-GS16K2-LD Harness

The HRN-GS16K2-LD is Geotab's universal OBD-II T-harness kit for 12 V light-duty vehicles such as cars, vans and pickups, built for GO devices that predate the GO10. Unlike the kit it replaced, it needs no HRN-CG13S1 adapter.

What Is the HRN-GS16K2-LD?

The HRN-GS16K2-LD is a 16-pin OBD-II T-harness kit for 12 V light-duty vehicles, meaning cars, vans and pickup trucks, used with Geotab GO devices from before the GO10. It contains the HRN-BM16T2-LD T-harness and 10 mounting adapters. Its purpose is simple: put the GO device somewhere sensible while the vehicle's diagnostic port stays reachable for any technician who needs it.

The part sits in the middle of a family tree. It replaced the universal HRN-GS16K22-A for light vehicles, and it has since been followed on the GO10 side by the HRN-XGS16K2-LD. For any fleet still running earlier GO hardware in its cars and vans, this is the current light-duty T-harness.

Which Vehicles and Devices Does the HRN-GS16K2-LD Work With?

Geotab designed this kit for 12 V light-duty vehicles only. Heavy-duty trucks and buses take the HD version. The vehicle connection is a standard 16-pin OBD-II port, and the harness runs 63 cm (24.8 in).

On the device side it uses the connection found on GO units before the GO10; the GO10's different connector is why the HRN-XGS16K2-LD exists. Geotab specifically notes that the HRN-CG13S1 adapter is not required with this harness. Geotab's entry lists the HRN-GS16K22-A as the part it replaces.

What Problem Does It Solve on the Job?

Geotab calls for a T-harness like this one in two situations: where the OBD-II location would put the device in the driver's way, and where the port sits too deep in its recess for a device to make a proper connection. Light trucks and vans hit both. Ports under steering columns sit right at shin height, and some trim panels surround the port so tightly that a directly mounted device never seats fully.

The other gain is serviceability. A repair shop, an inspection station or our own technicians can plug a scan tool into the vehicle without unplugging the GO device, which means no lost data and no reinstall after every oil change.

How Is the HRN-GS16K2-LD Installed?

With the vehicle switched off and secured, our process for this kit runs like this:

  1. Confirm the vehicle is 12 V light-duty; anything heavier calls for the HD kit.
  2. Pick whichever of the 10 adapters suits the dash opening and clip it onto the harness core.
  3. Release the factory OBD-II connector, connect it to the harness, and seat the harness core where the factory port was mounted.
  4. Plug the GO device into its branch and choose a resting place out of the driver's reach.
  5. Fix the device and both sides of each harness joint with cable ties, keeping all slack clear of the pedals.
  6. On USA vehicles, apply the enclosed CARB Executive Order identification label in the engine compartment near the vehicle emission control information label.
  7. Check that the device is reporting in MyGeotab or MyInstall before the vehicle leaves.

The kit's 63 cm counts toward Geotab's 2 m (6.5 ft) limit for the full connected length. A straight extension can be added only where Geotab's harness guide permits, and a second T-harness never joins this one.

What Should You Watch for When Fitting It?

Do not assume a big pickup is still light-duty; check the electrical system and the vehicle class before choosing between LD and HD. Leave the CARB label step until last so it does not get forgotten under the hood, and put it where an inspector will look for it. When the device moves off the port, its new spot still has to be dry and solid, since a device left loose behind a panel will rattle, chafe its lead and eventually drop data.

Which Related Harnesses Should You Compare?

  • HRN-GS16K2-HD: the 24 V heavy-duty sibling, with six adapters, for commercial trucks and buses.
  • HRN-GS16K22-A: the older universal kit that needed the HRN-CG13S1-A on some vehicles.
  • HRN-XGS16K2-LD: the same job on a GO10.
  • HRN-BS16S4: a straight 100 cm extension when the device needs to sit farther away.

What Should Light-Fleet Owners Know About the HRN-GS16K2-LD?

Does the HRN-GS16K2-LD need the HRN-CG13S1 adapter?

No. Geotab states the HRN-CG13S1 is not required with this harness, which is one of the main differences from the HRN-GS16K22-A it replaced.

What is the sticker that comes with the HRN-GS16K2-LD?

For vehicles in the USA, the kit includes a CARB Executive Order identification label. Geotab says to place it in the engine compartment near the vehicle's emission control information label, as it is used for smog checks and similar programs.

Which harness does a GO10 need instead of the HRN-GS16K2-LD?

The GO10 uses a different connector, so the equivalent light-duty part is the HRN-XGS16K2-LD, which Geotab lists as this kit's GO10 replacement.

For cars, vans and pickups, we provide both the Geotab unit and its harness, and our technicians fit them on site at your yard, often several vehicles in one visit. Get on the schedule at 803-513-1009, or let us know the fleet size through Get a Quote.
