Cranes are among the most expensive machines a company can own, and they earn money by the hour. We install GPS trackers and telematics gateways on rough terrain, all terrain, truck mounted and crawler cranes across Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Alabama, Florida and Mississippi, on site where they work.

A crane is booked, billed and maintained by its hours. Tracking gives the owner engine hours that match the work, the location of every crane across jobs and yards, and a record of road travel for cranes that drive themselves between sites.
Hours also help with inspections. OSHA requires cranes used in construction to have an annual comprehensive inspection on top of shift and monthly checks, and fleet platforms can schedule service and inspection reminders off the tracked hours and dates so nothing is missed. For rental fleets, tracked hours and locations are the record that backs up every invoice.
Knuckle boom crane trucks are a different job, with PTO and outrigger monitoring on the truck chassis. See crane truck GPS tracking for those.
Most mobile cranes are built in two parts: a carrier that drives, and an upper that rotates on top of it. Electrical power reaches the upper through a rotating connection called a collector ring, sometimes called a slip ring. We never add new circuits through it. The tracker goes where its power, ignition and a clear view of the sky are all on the same side of the rotation, usually in the carrier or in the cab that holds the ignition.
Some larger cranes have one engine in the carrier and a second one in the upper. On those, we agree with the owner which engine's hours the platform should count, or whether both should be tracked. Steel structures and booms can block the signal, so placement is checked with a live position test before we leave.

We have installed telematics gateways on cranes working on job sites in South Carolina and North Carolina. Read about it on our fleet install stories page.
We install trackers on every kind of machine on a job site. See heavy equipment GPS tracking for the full list, or go straight to a machine: skid steers · dozers · excavators · wheel loaders · backhoes.
