Zonar Guide · Overview
Zonar makes fleet tracking, inspection, video and asset tracking hardware for everyone from school districts to small service companies. Here is what Zonar is, what it sells and what to expect when it is installed.
Zonar Systems is a fleet telematics company whose hardware and software track vehicles and equipment, verify inspections, log driver hours and record video. Its original flagship is EVIR, Electronic Verified Inspection Reporting, which uses RFID tags on the vehicle and a handheld reader to prove that a driver actually walked around the truck during a pre-trip inspection.
Zonar's main platform grew up around school buses, municipal fleets and heavy trucks. Zonar later brought in GPS Trackit, and with it a lineup of plug-in and hardwired trackers, AI dash cameras and asset trackers aimed at smaller fleets. Today both lines sit under the Zonar name.
Zonar Ignition is the web portal for locations, trips, alerts and reports, and Zonar's support material also refers to Ground Traffic Control as the cloud application customers use. Zonar Coach is the video and driver coaching dashboard for the Zonar DashCam. Zonar Logs is the ELD app on the Connect tablet. Zonar also offers fault and predictive maintenance tools, tire pressure monitoring, school bus routing and the MyView parent app, plus an Emissions Check service that runs California Clean Truck Check scans remotely through the V4.
Zonar also sells Deviceless Telematics, which pulls location and diagnostic data straight from the vehicle manufacturer's cloud after the fleet gives consent, with no hardware at all. That works only for vehicles whose manufacturer shares that data, so many older vehicles, any trailer and any piece of equipment still needs a device, and every camera still needs an install.
School districts and bus contractors use the V4, EVIR, Z Pass and the Connect tablet together, and many Thomas Built buses come with a V4 from the factory. Municipal and public works fleets use input monitoring for plows, spreaders and PTO equipment. Utility and service fleets use tracking and cameras. Small businesses with a few vans or pickups are served by the Geo 88, the LMU-2630 and the AI Recorder.
On the main platform, the V4 is fussier about power than most trackers: its switched lead must be live only with the engine running, not in accessory, and a new install has to drive 100 feet at 5 mph before data shows. On the small fleet line, the hardwired units are classic three-wire installs with a white ignition lead that must never go to constant power, and the plug-in Geo 88 needs a clear sky view to report. The cameras need clean glass, the right power cord and a high-endurance memory card. Those details are where most callbacks start, and they are the details our technicians check before leaving a vehicle.
Zonar suits fleets that want inspections, ridership or emissions checks in the same system as tracking, and smaller fleets that want simple trackers and AI cameras on a monthly plan. Fleets with a single car may want to ask Zonar about plan minimums first. We install Zonar alongside every other major telematics and camera brand, so a fleet changing systems can have the old units removed and the new ones installed on the same visit.

GPS Trackit is now part of Zonar. Its trackers, AI cameras and asset trackers are sold under the Zonar name alongside Zonar's original V4 platform.
Electronic Verified Inspection Reporting. RFID tags on the vehicle and a handheld reader confirm that the driver was physically at each inspection point.
Zonar offers Deviceless Telematics for vehicles whose manufacturer shares data with it. Older vehicles, trailers, equipment and cameras still need hardware installed.
