Zonar Guide · Troubleshooting
When a Zonar device is not reporting, the fix is usually power, the ignition wire, the cable or sky view. Here is what to check on each device.
When a Zonar device is not reporting, the cause is almost always power, the ignition wire, the cable or sky view, in that order. This page lists the symptoms we see and what Zonar's own documents say to check, device by device.
Zonar's quick start guide gives the same first step for every device: look at the lights. No lights at all on a wired device means checking every wire, including the voltage wire. No lights on a plug-in means making sure it is fully seated in the port. If the lights are on, park outside with a clear view of the sky, run the ignition for 2 minutes, turn it off, and check the account for the right location and an Ignition Off event. If either is wrong, take a short 5 minute drive and check again before calling support.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Cellular light blinking | Poor coverage | Move to an area with coverage |
| GPS light blinking | No sky view | Fix placement or add the external antenna |
| Status blinking green, engine running | RPM not detected; switched power issue on J1708/J1939 installs | Check cables and the 4-pin pigtail; try a standalone 4-pin cable; call Zonar |
| Status solid green, engine off | White wire live with engine off | Move it to a circuit dead with the engine off |
| DataLink red | No engine computer connection | Check the data cable at both ends |
| Cold start flags, wrong idle times, straight-line trails | White wire hot in accessory or power miswired | Rewire the switched lead to an engine-run source |
| No input data | New install not driven yet | Drive 100 ft at 5 mph or more |
| Check engine light after first start (Light Duty) | Cable connected without engine running | Clear the fault; connect OBD-II with the engine running |
| Status four blinks | GPS storage full after long time without coverage | Return the vehicle to coverage so it can upload |
Zonar's guide says a plug-in that has not reported for over an hour is most likely off the mobile network. In a remote area it should reconnect when it comes back into coverage. If it stays offline, check that it is still plugged in and look for the green and orange LEDs on the side, which are faint. No lights may mean a blown fuse on the port circuit, so try the unit in another vehicle. If the lights stay dark in another vehicle, or the orange light keeps blinking after a few minutes, the unit needs Zonar support.
Most of the time the sticker over the light sensor is still on, so the unit never woke up. Remove it and shine light on the sensor until the LEDs flash. Allow up to 10 minutes for the first report, and confirm the serial number in the account matches the trailer it was mounted on.
After power, ground, ignition, cable and sky view have been checked and the unit still misbehaves. Zonar runs customer care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. When we install, we do this checking on site, so a fleet is not left calling support about a wiring mistake.

Almost always the ignition or switched wire is on a circuit that stays live with the engine off or in accessory. It needs to follow the ignition or engine.
A new V4 install must drive at least 100 feet at 5 mph or more before GPS and input data appear.
Usually no mobile coverage or the unit has come loose. Check that it is seated and look at its two LEDs.
