Zonar Guide · Comparison
Where Zonar stands out, where it installs like every other brand, and the questions that settle whether it fits a fleet.
We install every major telematics and camera brand, so we compare them by what changes on install day and what a fleet ends up using, not by marketing claims. Here is where Zonar stands out, where it works like everyone else, and which questions settle the choice.
| Install question | Zonar | What we see across other brands |
|---|---|---|
| Plug-in option for light vehicles | Geo 88, or V4 with Light Duty kit | Most brands offer a plug-in unit |
| Hidden hardwired option | LMU-2630 three-wire | Common, usually three-wire |
| Heavy truck connection | 9-pin, 6-pin, backbone or RP1226 cables | Similar choices; cable names differ by brand |
| Ignition sensing | V4 switched lead must be dead in accessory | Many units only need a key-on source |
| Post-install drive | V4 needs 100 ft at 5 mph before data shows | Varies by brand |
| Status lights | Five on the V4, two on the hardwired and plug-in units | Varies from one LED to several |
Yes. On a switch we remove the old hardware and install the new on the same visit, so vehicles are not out of service twice. Old harnesses and splitters come out with the old units, so nothing is left in the dash to cause problems later. A fleet running two systems during a transition can share a diagnostic port with a Y cable or splitter until the old units are retired.
Zonar fits school districts, bus contractors, municipalities and heavy truck fleets that want inspections, ridership or emissions alongside tracking, and small fleets that want simple trackers and AI cameras on a monthly plan. A fleet that only needs basic tracking on a few cars should compare plan minimums and pricing across providers. We install Zonar and every other major brand, so the choice is the fleet's, not ours.

Zonar has a deep school bus platform, with EVIR, Z Pass ridership, routing tools and a parent app, and many Thomas Built buses come with a V4 from the factory.
The plug-in and hardwired trackers install much like other brands. The V4 is stricter about its switched power lead and needs a short drive before data shows.
Yes, during a transition. Both can share a diagnostic port through a Y cable or splitter until the old units come out.
Tell us how many vehicles and what they are. We'll quote the hardware and the install together.
