Zonar Install Guide

Step-by-step installation for every Zonar device we install, from the V4 to the plug-in trackers, the AI Recorder and the asset trackers.

Every Zonar install follows the same order of work: plan, power, mount, test, verify. What changes from device to device is the power source, the cable and what the lights should do when it is right. This guide walks through each Zonar device the way our technicians install it, using Zonar's own installation guides as the rulebook.

What Happens Before Any Zonar Install Starts?

  • Identify the vehicle's ports. 16-pin OBD-II, 9-pin Deutsch (square or hex), 6-pin Deutsch, RP1226 or nothing at all. That decides the cable.
  • Check what is already plugged in. An existing tracker or camera on the same port means a Y cable or splitter.
  • Record the serial number and the vehicle or asset name. Zonar needs both to match the device to the right unit in the account.
  • Plan the mount and the cable route. Sky view for GPS, away from heat and moisture, no pinch points, clear of airbags.
  • Lock out equipment. On trailers and machines, Zonar's solar guide calls for lockout and tagout, parking brake, wheel chocks and cribbing before work starts.

How Is a Zonar V4 Installed?

  1. Inventory the unit, mounting plate, screws and cables.
  2. Disconnect the battery ground (Zonar's suggestion).
  3. Install the power and data cable, leaving the 4-pin and OBD-II connectors unplugged.
  4. Add the discrete I/O cable and external GPS antenna if used.
  5. Mount the plate and V4 flat, logo up, with a sky view through glass or fiberglass.
  6. Connect everything except the 4-pin power, reconnect the battery, then plug in the 4-pin.
  7. Start the engine, then connect OBD-II on light-duty installs.
  8. Within 2 minutes, confirm Cellular, GPS, Status and DataLink lights; check Status blinks with the key off and in accessory.
  9. Drive at least 100 feet at 5 mph or more so GPS and input data appear.

The switched white wire must be live only with the engine running and dead in accessory. Red and white are fused at 3 to 5 amps close to the source, and only Littelfuse or Bussmann fuse taps are approved, never in a slot above 10 amps.

How Is the Geo 88 Plug-and-Play Installed?

  1. Park outdoors with a clear view of the sky, with no metal roof or overhang.
  2. Plug the Geo 88 into the OBD-II port, or into the OBD-II Y cable if the port must stay free or the unit would hang in the driver's way.
  3. On heavy trucks, use the J-Bus cable that matches the square or hex 9-pin port.
  4. Run the engine to help it report sooner. It should report within a few minutes.
  5. Check the green and orange LEDs on the side if it has not reported within an hour.

How Are the LMU-2630 and TTU-2830 Installed?

  1. Mount the unit securely where it has no metal above it and stays away from heater vents and engine heat.
  2. Red to constant 12 or 24 V (7 to 32 V), black to chassis ground, white to a true ignition source that reads 0 V with the vehicle off, with a 3 A inline fuse.
  3. Insulate every unused wire. Zonar's LMU-2630 guide says not to use quick taps or leave cut wires exposed.
  4. Add inputs, starter disable, driver ID, buzzer or temperature sensors as ordered.
  5. Power up outdoors and wait for solid orange and solid green. GPS lock can take up to five minutes.
  6. Turn the ignition on for 2 minutes, then off, and confirm in the account that the location is right and the last event is Ignition Off.

How Is the VidFleet AI Recorder Installed?

  1. Insert a high-endurance microSD card under the security panel.
  2. Connect the OBD-II, J1939 or direct-wire power cord and route it to the windshield with a little slack.
  3. On direct wire, white to a proven switched fuse, red to a proven constant fuse, both through fuse taps with the 5 A fuse in the upper socket, black to bare chassis metal.
  4. Clean the glass and mount just below the driver side of the mirror, flat plate on upright glass, wedge plate on raked glass.
  5. Power on: blue, then red once recording. Run the checks in the Zonar Video app.
  6. Level the road camera, set the driver camera, add auxiliary cameras and lock the security panel.

How Are the Solar Tracker and ZTrak Installed?

The solar tracker ships asleep: peel the sticker off the light sensor on the back and expose it to light until the LEDs flash. Mount it where the panel gets full sun and road debris will not hit it, usually the trailer's top rail at the nose, using the four self-tapping screws in 9/64 inch pilot holes. Never use adhesive. It can take up to 10 minutes to appear in the platform.

ZTrak needs no wiring. Place it where it can see sky when possible, conceal it on theft-prone assets, record where it went, and agree on the daily ping rate with the customer, since battery life depends on it.

How Do We Confirm a Zonar Install Is Finished?

We do not leave on lights alone. Every install ends with the device reporting in the customer's account: the right location on the map, the right ignition event, inputs changing state when the switch is thrown, and on cameras a live preview and network test. The vehicle name and serial number go on the job record so the account and the hardware match.

What Are Common Questions About Zonar Install Guide?

How long does a Zonar install take?

Zonar says the plug-in Geo 88 installs in minutes and the auxiliary camera mounts in under ten. Hardwired trackers and cameras take longer because of wiring and testing, and we confirm the time on the quote.

Does a Zonar install need a test drive?

On the V4 with the 3-wire, 4-wire or Light Duty cable, yes: at least 100 feet at 5 mph or more before GPS and input data appear.

Which wire do most Zonar install problems come from?

The ignition or switched wire. It must follow the ignition or engine, never constant power.
