Student ridership readers record each student boarding and leaving the bus with a tap of an RFID card, so the district knows who rode, which bus they were on and where they got off.

Each student gets an RFID card, often on a lanyard or a backpack tag. A reader mounted at the entrance picks up the card as the student boards and again when they get off. The tracker adds the time and location, so each tap becomes a record of a real boarding at a real stop.
When a parent calls because a child has not come home, the office can see the last tap in moments.
Bus rosters and real ridership drift apart over a school year. Ridership records give transportation staff actual numbers for route planning, and they give administrators a factual answer during emergencies or custody questions instead of relying on a driver's memory of a full bus.
At the entry door, where every student passes within reach as they climb the steps. It has to read cards quickly so the line keeps moving, and it must stay clear of the handrail and the door mechanism. The wiring runs back to the tracker behind the panels.
The reader records a card number, the time and the bus location. Which names are attached to those numbers, who can see them and how long records are kept are set by the district in its ridership software, not by the installer.
Before the bus goes back in service we tap test cards in and out at the door at the pace students actually board, and check that every tap appears on the district's side with the right time and stop. We also check the reader picks up a card held at different heights, because a kindergartner and a senior do not hold a card in the same place. A reader that misses taps is moved or adjusted until it doesn't.
Ridership works alongside driver ID, warning light and stop arm records, so each stop shows who drove, who got on and off, and whether the lights and arm were out. See the full list on our school bus tracking page.
We wire PTO monitoring into trackers from all of these brands. Need heavy duty trackers for trucks or heavy equipment? Every brand below makes them, so pick yours and we install it.
Common questions

The ride is not recorded automatically, so the district's ridership software and procedures decide how it is handled.
Some ridership platforms send parents a notice when their child boards or leaves the bus. That is a feature of the software the district chooses.
Yes. Any bus with a reader and a tracker records taps the same way, whatever the trip.
