Liftgate Monitoring

A liftgate on a box truck or trailer is used at almost every delivery, and a gate left down or unfolded can cause real damage. We wire liftgate status into GPS trackers so every cycle is recorded and unsafe driving is flagged, for delivery and distribution fleets across Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Alabama, Florida and Mississippi.

How do liftgates work?

A liftgate is a powered platform at the rear of a truck or trailer that lifts freight between the ground and the cargo floor. Most are electro hydraulic, powered by the truck's batteries through a heavy cable with a cutoff switch in the cab. Rail gates, tuckaway gates and cantilever gates each fold and stow differently. Many have a stowed or in-use status that can be read safely, or a sensor can be added at the stowed position.

What can be monitored?

Wire references are in our Vehicle Wiring Database.

Why does it matter?

Driving with a liftgate down or partly stowed can damage the gate, the road and other vehicles. An alert catches it immediately. Liftgate maintenance follows cycles, and an accurate count keeps gates safe. Gates left powered drain truck batteries overnight, which shows up as morning no-starts.

For delivery operations, liftgate events at each stop also confirm that a delivery was unloaded at the right address and show how long unloading took, which helps plan routes and staffing.

What must an install respect?

After the install we run the gate through a full cycle, unfold, lower, raise and stow, and confirm each state shows correctly on the platform before the truck goes back into service.

How does it fit with other sensors?

Liftgate status pairs well with cargo door sensors. See van and box truck sensor tracking.

Who uses it?

Food and beverage distributors, furniture and appliance delivery, parcel and freight fleets, rental truck fleets and municipal fleets with box trucks.

What other PTO and equipment monitoring do we install?

This is one of the work truck and equipment applications we wire into GPS trackers. See all of them on our PTO and equipment monitoring page, and find wire colors for your truck in our Vehicle Wiring Database.

Which GPS tracking brands do we install?

We wire PTO monitoring into trackers from all of these brands. Need heavy duty trackers for trucks or heavy equipment? Every brand below makes them, so pick yours and we install it.
