Wrecker Monitoring and GPS Tracking

On a wrecker, the hook-up is the work, and the tracker alone only shows where the truck stopped. We wire the PTO, the wheel lift or boom and the light bar into your tracker so each call shows when the truck was actually hooking up. We do this across Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Alabama, Florida and Mississippi.

What is a wrecker?

A wrecker is a tow truck with a hydraulic boom, a wheel lift under the rear, and usually one or two winches. Light duty wreckers handle cars and pickups, while heavy duty rotators and integrated wreckers recover trucks and buses.

The boom, wheel lift and winches run on hydraulics driven by a PTO, and the warning lights come on at the scene. Those signals tell a dispatcher a lot about what the truck is doing.

What can be monitored on a wrecker?

Wire colors for the chassis side are in our Vehicle Wiring Database.

What does a fleet manager see in the reports?

Each call shows how long the truck sat at the scene and how long the hydraulics ran, which separates a quick hook from a long recovery. Owners use this to back up recovery invoices, answer motor club and police rotation questions, and service hydraulics by PTO hours. The signals are simple on and off inputs, so they work with trackers that have auxiliary inputs. How the reports look depends on how your platform names and shows those inputs.

What must a wrecker install never do?

For the whole group, see our tow truck tracking page.

Who uses wrecker monitoring?

Towing and recovery companies, roadside assistance providers, police rotation tow operators, impound lots and municipal fleets with their own wreckers.

During busy nights and storms, dispatch can see which wreckers are hooked up and which are clear, so the next call goes to a truck that is actually free.

Where can I see other PTO and equipment monitoring?

This is one of the work truck and equipment applications we wire into GPS trackers. See all of them on our PTO and equipment monitoring page, and find wire colors for your truck in our Vehicle Wiring Database.

Which GPS tracking brands do we install?

We wire PTO monitoring into trackers from all of these brands. Need heavy duty trackers for trucks or heavy equipment? Every brand below makes them, so pick yours and we install it.

Common questions

Questions We Get Asked

Can a tracker show when a tow truck was hooking up?

Yes. The PTO signal and a wheel lift or boom switch wired into the tracker show when the hydraulics were in use.

Will monitoring change how my light bar works?

No. We only read the signal; the light bar switches and circuits work the same as before.
