A hooklift truck swaps bodies all day: a dumpster here, a flatbed there, a salt body in winter. We wire the hook arm and PTO into the GPS tracker so every drop and pickup is recorded with a time and a place, for waste haulers, municipalities and contractors across Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Alabama, Florida and Mississippi.

A hooklift uses a hydraulic arm with a hook at the top. The arm reaches back, grabs a bar on the front of a container or body, and pulls it up and onto the truck frame. To unload, the arm pushes the container back down to the ground. The hydraulics are driven by a pump on a PTO from the truck transmission, so when the PTO is engaged the arm can move.
A hooklift is different from a roll-off truck, which pulls containers on with a cable and winch. Both are covered at a fleet level on our roll-off and hooklift tracking page. This page is about the hooklift itself.
Truck side wire colors are in our Vehicle Wiring Database.
For a container business, every drop and pickup is a billable event and every container is an asset that can go missing. A record of where each one was dropped and when it was picked up settles billing questions and helps find containers that have sat too long at a customer site.
It also protects the truck. Driving with the arm raised is a costly mistake around bridges, wires and overhead doors, and an alert catches it before it happens twice. Hook arm cylinders and hydraulic pumps are serviced by use, which tracked PTO hours count.
Dumpster and container rental companies, municipal public works departments that swap dump, salt and flatbed bodies on one chassis, scrap and recycling haulers, and contractors who move their own containers between job sites.
This is one of the work truck and equipment applications we wire into GPS trackers. See all of them on our PTO and equipment monitoring page, and find wire colors for your truck in our Vehicle Wiring Database.
We wire PTO monitoring into trackers from all of these brands. Need heavy duty trackers for trucks or heavy equipment? Every brand below makes them, so pick yours and we install it.
