Gutter Broom and Sweeper Monitoring

The gutter brooms are the spinning side brushes that pull debris out of the curb line and into a street sweeper's path. Recording when they are down tells you which curbs were actually swept. We wire broom and sweeper signals into GPS trackers for cities and sweeping contractors across Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Alabama, Florida and Mississippi.

How do gutter brooms work?

Most street sweepers have one or two gutter brooms mounted at the front corners. Lowered against the curb, they spin to sweep dirt, leaves and litter from the gutter toward the main broom or pickup head in the center of the machine. Mechanical broom sweepers lift debris onto a conveyor, while regenerative air and vacuum sweepers pull it up with air. The brooms are raised, lowered and spun by hydraulics, often powered by an auxiliary engine on the sweeper body.

What can be monitored?

Chassis wire colors are in our Vehicle Wiring Database.

Why does it matter?

Many cities sweep to meet stormwater permit requirements, because debris in the gutter washes into storm drains and streams. A record of which curbs were swept and when supports those reports. Residents who call about missed streets can be answered with a map instead of a guess, and supervisors can see coverage across routes during the week.

Contract sweepers serving parking lots and commercial properties use the same record to back up invoices. Broom hours also guide brush replacement, which is one of the biggest running costs on a sweeper.

What goes wrong on sweeper installs?

Who uses gutter broom monitoring?

City street departments, county public works, airports, universities and private sweeping contractors. The rest of the road crew fleet is on our street sweeper and road crew tracking page.

Where can I see other PTO and equipment monitoring?

This is one of the work truck and equipment applications we wire into GPS trackers. See all of them on our PTO and equipment monitoring page, and find wire colors for your truck in our Vehicle Wiring Database.

Which GPS tracking brands do we install?

We wire PTO monitoring into trackers from all of these brands. Need heavy duty trackers for trucks or heavy equipment? Every brand below makes them, so pick yours and we install it.

Common questions

Questions We Get Asked

Can a tracker show which streets a sweeper swept?

Yes, with the broom down signal wired into the tracker, sweeping shows on the map by street and time.

Does it help with stormwater reporting?

It gives a dated, located record of sweeping. What a permit requires depends on the permit.
