Dump Truck Monitoring and GPS Tracking

Dump trucks are paid by the load, and a driving-with-the-bed-up mistake can take down a power line or a bridge sign. We wire a body up switch and the PTO into your tracker so every dump is counted and a raised bed sets off an alert. We do this across Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Alabama, Florida and Mississippi.

What is a dump truck?

A dump truck has an open bed on a hydraulic hoist that tips the load out the back or side. Tandem and tri-axle dump trucks haul gravel, dirt, asphalt and debris for construction, paving and road work.

The hoist runs on a hydraulic pump driven by a PTO. A switch that opens when the bed leaves the frame tells the tracker each time the truck dumps.

What can be monitored on a dump truck?

Wire colors for the chassis side are in our Vehicle Wiring Database.

What does a fleet manager see in the reports?

Managers get a dump count per truck per day, with the location of each dump, so load tickets and hauling invoices can be checked against what the truck actually did. Bed up alerts also show which drivers keep moving before the bed is all the way down. The signals are simple on and off inputs, so they work with trackers that have auxiliary inputs. How the reports look depends on how your platform names and shows those inputs.

What must a dump truck install never do?

For the whole group, see our dump truck tracking page.

Who uses dump truck monitoring?

Aggregate and material haulers, paving and site work contractors, landscaping companies, state and county road departments and city public works.

On jobs billed by the load, the dump count backs up the invoice, and on public works it shows where material was actually placed.

Where can I see other PTO and equipment monitoring?

This is one of the work truck and equipment applications we wire into GPS trackers. See all of them on our PTO and equipment monitoring page, and find wire colors for your truck in our Vehicle Wiring Database.

Which GPS tracking brands do we install?

We wire PTO monitoring into trackers from all of these brands. Need heavy duty trackers for trucks or heavy equipment? Every brand below makes them, so pick yours and we install it.

Common questions

Questions We Get Asked

Can a GPS tracker count dump truck loads?

Yes. A body up switch wired to the tracker logs each time the bed is raised, with time and location.

Can it alert if the bed is up while driving?

Yes. The body up signal combined with vehicle movement can trigger an alert to the office or driver.
