Crane Truck Monitoring and GPS Tracking

A crane truck is only earning when the crane is working, and a GPS dot cannot tell a crane lift from a lunch stop. We wire the outriggers, the crane stow position and the PTO into your tracker so every stop shows whether the crane was actually used. We do this across Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Alabama, Florida and Mississippi.

What is a crane truck?

A crane truck is a straight truck with a hydraulic crane mounted behind the cab or at the rear of the bed. Knuckle boom cranes fold up when stowed, and stiff boom cranes telescope. They unload building materials, set equipment, place trusses and lift loads onto job sites without a separate crane.

The crane pump is usually driven by a PTO, and the outriggers or stabilizers go down before a lift. Those are the signals we wire into the tracker.

What can be monitored on a crane truck?

Wire colors for the chassis side are in our Vehicle Wiring Database.

What does a fleet manager see in the reports?

Each delivery stop shows how long the truck was set up and how long the crane was out, so managers can see which deliveries really needed the crane and how long each unload took. That helps with pricing crane deliveries, checking driver time on site, and planning hydraulic service by PTO hours. The signals are simple on and off inputs, so they work with trackers that have auxiliary inputs. How the reports look depends on how your platform names and shows those inputs.

What must a crane truck install never do?

For the whole group, see our crane truck and knuckle boom tracking page.

Who uses crane truck monitoring?

Building supply and lumber yards, truss and steel delivery companies, HVAC and equipment installers, sign companies and municipal fleets.

For yards running several crane trucks, the record shows which trucks are busy lifting and which are mostly driving, which helps when deciding where the next crane truck should go.

Where can I see other PTO and equipment monitoring?

This is one of the work truck and equipment applications we wire into GPS trackers. See all of them on our PTO and equipment monitoring page, and find wire colors for your truck in our Vehicle Wiring Database.

Which GPS tracking brands do we install?

We wire PTO monitoring into trackers from all of these brands. Need heavy duty trackers for trucks or heavy equipment? Every brand below makes them, so pick yours and we install it.

Common questions

Questions We Get Asked

Can a GPS tracker show when a crane truck used its crane?

Yes. A switch on the crane stow position and the PTO signal wired into the tracker record when the crane was in use.

Can it alert if a driver pulls away with the outriggers down?

Yes. An outrigger switch combined with vehicle movement can trigger an alert in most platforms that support input alerts.
