Azuga's rugged battery-only asset tracker. How it turns on, how long it lasts, how it mounts and why it can look quiet at first.
The Long-Life Asset Tracker is Azuga's rugged, battery-only tracker for things that have no power: trailers, containers, equipment. Azuga's asset management page lists it as the GL502A and says IP68. Azuga's help center articles say GL502 without the A, so the two names appear to describe one product line. The A suffix appears only on azuga.com.
Azuga describes it as battery-powered, and its install guide has no wiring step. It uses cellular and GPS, and it runs on one large internal battery.
| Item | Azuga says |
|---|---|
| Battery | 57,000 mAh internal |
| Battery life | 3 to 5 years, depending on ping frequency |
| Default ping rate | Once every 24 hours |
| Waterproofing | IP68, about 6 m for about 30 minutes |
| Operating temperature | -20 to +60 C. Azuga does not give an optimum. |
| Controls | No button. A magnetic reed switch turns it on. |
| In the box | The tracker, a lanyard kit and a magnetic mount |
A tracker that reports once a day is not a live tracker. It answers the question, “Is my trailer still where I left it?” It does not answer, “Where is it right now?” That trade is what buys the multi-year battery. If you raise the ping rate, you spend the battery faster. Azuga ties the 3 to 5 year figure to ping frequency, which tells you the same thing.
Plan the first day
Because the default is one ping per day, do not decide a new GL502 is dead on day one. Azuga's activation check is in Admin, under Devices, in the Activation status column. A partner copy of Azuga's guide adds that events should reach the Live page about 5 to 10 minutes after the tracker is activated and moved.
Azuga's guide gives two ways. The magnetic way is faster. The screw way is permanent.
Azuga has two articles on this and they are not identical. One gives detailed steps and says top side up. The shorter one lists only the two methods and gives no orientation rule. The partner copy says to mount with the top surface facing open sky. Follow the detailed steps, and keep the top toward the sky.
Trailers and equipment parked for long stretches where an occasional check-in is enough.
Anything that moves daily and needs a live map. Use a hardwired tracker, or the GV620MG with external power, for that job.
Azuga says to hold the supplied magnet over the magnetic reed switch for a few seconds. The switch is open by default, and the magnet powers the tracker on. You can then remove the magnet or leave it in place.
Azuga's default ping rate is once every 24 hours. That is why a new GL502 can look quiet for a long time. It is working as designed.
Azuga gives a 57,000 mAh internal battery and 3 to 5 years depending on ping frequency.
Azuga lists it as IP68 and says it can handle about 6 meters for about 30 minutes.
