PTO and equipment monitoring

Auxiliary Engine Monitoring

Many work trucks have a second engine that runs the equipment while the truck engine rests: a pony motor on a vacuum truck, a sweeper's auxiliary engine, a jetter pump engine. We wire auxiliary engines into the GPS tracker so their hours are counted and their work is recorded, across Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Alabama, Florida and Mississippi.

What is an auxiliary engine?

An auxiliary engine, sometimes called a pony motor or deck engine, is a separate engine mounted on the truck body to drive equipment. Sweepers, hydro excavators, combination sewer cleaners, waterblasting trucks, some vacuum trucks and many specialty bodies use one, so the equipment can run at a steady speed without working the truck's drivetrain.

Why monitor it separately?

A standard GPS tracker watches the truck's ignition. On an auxiliary engine truck, that tells you almost nothing about the work. The truck engine may be off, or idling, while the auxiliary engine runs the equipment all day. Fleets that only track the truck end up with idle reports that make no sense and service schedules that miss the engine doing most of the work.

What can be monitored?

Wire colors on the truck side are in our Vehicle Wiring Database.

What goes wrong?

Which trucks have auxiliary engines?

Street sweepers, hydro excavators, combination sewer cleaners, industrial vacuum trucks, stripe removal trucks, some asphalt distributors and many specialty bodies. Each of those has its own page on our PTO and equipment monitoring page.

Who uses auxiliary engine monitoring?

Municipal fleets and contractors who run specialty trucks and want honest equipment hours. Other service body equipment is on our service truck tracking page.

Where can I see other PTO and equipment monitoring?

This is one of the work truck and equipment applications we wire into GPS trackers. See all of them on our PTO and equipment monitoring page, and find wire colors for your truck in our Vehicle Wiring Database.

Which GPS tracking brands do we install?

We wire PTO monitoring into trackers from all of these brands. Need heavy duty trackers for trucks or heavy equipment? Every brand below makes them, so pick yours and we install it.

Common questions

Questions We Get Asked

Can a GPS tracker count pony motor hours?

Yes, with the auxiliary engine's run signal wired into a tracker input.

Why not just use the truck's ignition?

Because the auxiliary engine can run with the truck engine off or idling, and it is the one doing the work.
