Wood Chipper GPS Tracking

A towable brush chipper is worth a lot of money, sits on job sites and road shoulders, and can be hooked to any truck with the right hitch. We install GPS trackers on wood chippers for tree service companies, landscapers, utilities and public works crews across Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Alabama, Florida and Mississippi.

Why track a wood chipper separately from the truck?

The chipper and the truck are two different assets. Crews unhook chippers at job sites, swap them between trucks and leave them parked at the yard or the end of a street overnight. A tracker on the truck says nothing about where the chipper went. A tracker on the chipper itself shows where it is, when it moves without a truck it should be behind, and how many hours its engine ran.

That matters for theft, and it matters for planning. Owners with several chippers can see which ones work every day and which sit, before buying or renting another.

How is a chipper powered, and what does that mean for the tracker?

Most towable brush chippers have their own gas or diesel engine, with its own battery and key switch. That is good news for tracking: the tracker can be hardwired to the chipper's battery for constant power, with its ignition input on the chipper's key-on circuit, so engine hours are counted whenever the chipper runs.

Some smaller chippers are driven by a tractor PTO and have no engine or battery of their own. Those get a battery powered asset tracker, which reports location and movement but not engine hours.

What can a chipper tracker report?

Wire colors and fusing guidance are in our Vehicle Wiring Database.

Where does a tracker go on a chipper?

Chippers shake hard, throw debris and get pressure washed. The tracker goes inside a protected compartment or behind a panel near the engine controls, away from the feed and discharge areas, with a clear enough view of the sky to get a position. It should be hidden, because a tracker a thief can see is the first thing removed.

Wiring is short, fused and tied down, and kept away from the engine exhaust and the moving drum or disc.

What goes wrong with chipper tracking?

What other PTO and equipment monitoring do we install?

This is one of the work truck and equipment applications we wire into GPS trackers. See all of them on our PTO and equipment monitoring page, and find wire colors for your truck in our Vehicle Wiring Database.

Which GPS tracking brands do we install?

We wire PTO monitoring into trackers from all of these brands. Need heavy duty trackers for trucks or heavy equipment? Every brand below makes them, so pick yours and we install it.

Common questions

Questions We Get Asked

Can you put a GPS tracker on a brush chipper?

Yes. Chippers with their own engine get a hardwired tracker, and PTO driven chippers get a battery tracker.

Will it show chipper engine hours?

Yes, on chippers with their own engine, when the tracker's ignition input is wired to the chipper's key-on circuit.

Can it alert me if the chipper moves at night?

Yes. Movement and geofence alerts are available on most fleet platforms.
