Transit Bus Driver Communication Tablets

A rugged tablet at the driver's station carries messages between dispatch and the driver, so instructions, detours and replies go through a mounted screen instead of a personal phone. We install them at your depot across Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Alabama, Florida and Mississippi.

What is a driver communication tablet?

Example photo, not a customer job.

A rugged tablet locked into a powered mount beside the driver, running the agency's messaging and route software. It stays charged, stays in place, and stays with the bus when the driver changes at a relief point.

What do drivers and dispatch use it for?

Why not just use a phone?

Phones get lost, die and pull drivers' eyes down to their laps. A mounted tablet sits at a set height and angle, many systems limit what a driver can do while the bus is moving, and work messages stay off drivers' personal devices.

A mounted tablet also stays with the bus. When operators change at a relief point, the incoming operator signs in on the same screen and picks up any open messages, instead of dispatch chasing the right phone number.

How do we install the mount?

We bolt the mount to structure on the dash or a pedestal, not to a trim panel, so it does not shake loose on rough roads. Power runs from a fused source through the mount's charging dock, with the cables hidden behind the panels. The tablet must be reachable without leaning and must not block mirrors or the windshield.

Does it connect to the GPS tracker?

In many systems it does, so messages, forms and trip data line up with the bus location record. Where the tablet and tracker come from different vendors, we confirm they talk to each other on the first bus before installing the rest of the fleet.

What should an agency decide before install?

Which side of the driver the tablet goes on, how far it sits from the farebox, and whether drivers should be able to remove it. Those choices affect every shift, so we set them with the agency on a first bus, let a few drivers use it, and then repeat the layout across the fleet.

Who uses it?

City and county transit agencies, paratransit operators, university, hospital and airport shuttles, and private contractors running fixed routes. See everything we install on a transit bus on our transit bus tracking page.

Which GPS tracking brands do we install?

We wire PTO monitoring into trackers from all of these brands. Need heavy duty trackers for trucks or heavy equipment? Every brand below makes them, so pick yours and we install it.

Common questions

Questions We Get Asked

Can the tablet be removed from the bus?

Most docks lock the tablet in place, with a key held by the shop.

Do you supply the tablets?

We install the tablets and mounts your provider specifies, and we can supply equipment along with the installation.

Will it run the battery down?

No. It charges while the bus is running and the dock is wired so it does not drain the battery when parked.

Can the tablet show the route as well as messages?

Many do. Some agencies run messaging and turn-by-turn route guidance on the same tablet, while others keep a separate dispatch screen.
