A tow plow is a steerable plow trailer pulled behind a heavy truck. Steered out to the side, it clears a second lane at the same time as the truck. We wire tow plow position and blade signals into GPS tracking for highway departments across Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Alabama, Florida and Mississippi.

A tow plow is a trailer with a long blade along its length. Hydraulic steering lets the operator swing the trailer out to the side, so its blade covers the next lane while the truck plows its own. Many tow plows also carry a material spreader. Hydraulic power comes from the tow truck through hoses, and electrical control comes through a cable from the cab.
Truck side wire colors are in our Vehicle Wiring Database.
Tow plows exist to clear more lane miles per truck. A record of where the tow plow was deployed shows exactly how many extra lane miles were covered and where, which helps highway departments justify the equipment and plan routes. Location tracking on the trailer itself keeps track of an expensive asset that spends much of the year parked at a yard.
Operators also need to know when the tow plow is tucked in behind the truck and when it is steered out, because a deployed tow plow takes up a second lane. Supervisors watching the map can see where trucks are running with the trailer out, which helps when coordinating with traffic control and other plow trucks on multi-lane roads.
State departments of transportation and large county road departments are the main users of tow plows. For other snow equipment see our snow plow tracking page.
This is one of the work truck and equipment applications we wire into GPS trackers. See all of them on our PTO and equipment monitoring page, and find wire colors for your truck in our Vehicle Wiring Database.
We wire PTO monitoring into trackers from all of these brands. Need heavy duty trackers for trucks or heavy equipment? Every brand below makes them, so pick yours and we install it.
