Amber Beacon Light Monitoring

Amber beacons and warning lights protect crews working beside traffic. A record of when they were on, and where, shows that crews followed the rules at every roadside stop. We wire beacon and warning light status into GPS trackers for utility, towing, road and service fleets across Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Alabama, Florida and Mississippi.

Where does the beacon signal come from?

Amber beacons, light bars and strobes on work trucks are switched from the cab, often through a switch panel or a controller with several modes. The circuit that powers the lights, or a status output on the controller, gives the tracker a clean on and off signal through an isolated input.

What can be monitored?

Wire colors are in our Vehicle Wiring Database.

Why does it matter?

Many fleets have safety policies requiring warning lights whenever a truck is stopped beside traffic, and state rules on warning lights vary. A dated, located record of light use at every stop helps safety managers coach crews, supports the company after a roadside crash, and shows insurers a working safety program.

For towing and roadside assistance companies, the record is especially useful because so much of their work happens on highway shoulders, often at night, where visibility is everything.

What goes wrong?

How does it fit with other signals?

Beacon status pairs well with PTO, boom and outrigger signals on utility and tow trucks, so the record shows a truck set up, lit and working. See our PTO and equipment monitoring page.

Who uses it?

Electric, gas and water utilities, towing and roadside assistance companies, road maintenance and traffic control contractors, municipal public works and mobile service fleets.

What other PTO and equipment monitoring do we install?

This is one of the work truck and equipment applications we wire into GPS trackers. See all of them on our PTO and equipment monitoring page, and find wire colors for your truck in our Vehicle Wiring Database.

Which GPS tracking brands do we install?

We wire PTO monitoring into trackers from all of these brands. Need heavy duty trackers for trucks or heavy equipment? Every brand below makes them, so pick yours and we install it.

Common questions

Questions We Get Asked

Can a GPS tracker show whether warning lights were on at a stop?

Yes, with the beacon circuit wired into an isolated tracker input.

Can it alert when a truck stops roadside without beacons?

Many platforms can build that rule from the stop and the beacon input.
