Inland Port Greer handled 205,523 rail moves in FY2025, its first year over 200,000. It runs 24/7 gate access with 11-minute average truck turn times and overnight Norfolk Southern service six days a week, serving 150-plus customers. A $55 million expansion raised annual lift capacity to 300,000 moves.
The manufacturing base behind that volume is deep. Michelin North America is headquartered in Greenville. GE Vernova has built gas turbines here since 1968 and describes the site as the world's center of gas turbine manufacturing, with 2,500-plus employees and a $160 million investment announced in January 2025. Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, ZF, Electrolux and Arthrex all operate here, alongside 40-plus additional manufacturers with 500 or more employees each.
Thirty minutes up I-85, BMW's Spartanburg plant runs more than 1,500 vehicles a day with 11,000-plus employees. Healthcare adds Prisma Health and Bon Secours Mercy Health as major fleet operators.
The metro crossed one million residents in 2025 — 1,014,101, up 9.25% since 2020 — which is putting real strain on the service, construction and delivery fleets working the same roads as the freight.

A service van out of commission for two hours costs you a service call. A supplier tractor out of commission for two hours during a JIT run can idle a production line. That difference drives how we schedule Upstate work: smaller batches, tighter windows, and often overnight or shift-change installs rather than mid-day.

SCDOT launched an I-85 Corridor Study in 2026 covering 35 miles from US 29 at Exit 34 to SC 85 at Exit 69, spanning 18 interchanges across Anderson, Greenville and Spartanburg counties, with SC Ports and GSP as study partners. Separately, the I-85 widening between mile markers 77 and 98 — 21 miles — has been pushed back to 2030.
For fleets running the corridor daily, that means a long horizon of planning uncertainty followed by extended construction. Baseline transit-time data collected now becomes genuinely valuable for comparison later.
GSP International operates a $33 million, 110,000 square foot cargo facility on a 17-acre apron sized to handle three Boeing 747-8 freighters simultaneously, with a 20-ton overhead crane and a cooled facility for healthcare equipment. Senator International runs a regular transatlantic service out of it. If your fleet touches air freight, the ground-side operation here is larger than the passenger terminal suggests.
South Carolina requires no safety inspection and no emissions test. It does limit commercial diesel vehicles at 10,001 lbs GVWR or more to 10 minutes of idling per 60-minute period, at $75 per offense — a rule that idle reporting addresses directly. There's no coastal corrosion factor here and no hurricane evacuation reversal; the Upstate variables are congestion, construction and shift cadence.
