How Long Is Dash Cam Footage Stored, and How Do You Get It After an Incident?

API Signal · Footage Storage · Updated September 17, 2026

It depends on the system, but most local storage loops over in days to a couple of weeks unless an event locks the clip or it's uploaded to the cloud. If you need footage after an incident, the safest move is to export or lock it through your platform's app as soon as you know you'll need it — waiting risks the loop overwriting it first.

How Long Is Dash Cam Footage Stored?

Most systems store footage locally on an SD card or onboard storage that loops continuously — typically days to a couple of weeks, depending on card size and video quality settings. Cloud-connected systems can retain footage far longer if the platform is configured that way.

What's the Difference Between Local Storage and Cloud Storage?

Local storage loops and overwrites itself once the card fills, limited by its size. Cloud storage keeps uploaded footage according to your platform's plan and retention settings, and it's accessible independent of the vehicle or card.

Does an Event Trigger Change How Long Footage Is Kept?

Yes — impact or harsh-event triggered clips are usually flagged and protected from the normal overwrite loop, separate from ordinary continuous driving footage that keeps cycling.

How Do You Actually Get Footage After an Incident?

Through your telematics or camera platform's own app or software — a fleet manager or admin exports the clip from there. It's not something requested through API Signal, since we don't hold or store the data ourselves.

What Happens If You Wait Too Long to Pull Footage?

Local loop storage can overwrite the clip once the card cycles back around, so exporting or locking it soon after an incident matters — sometimes within days, depending on how much driving happens in between.

Can Storage Settings Be Adjusted After Install?

Usually, yes — retention length, video quality, and cloud upload are typically configurable in the platform itself. That's the fleet's call; we can explain what the installed hardware supports.

Does API Signal Install Systems with Cloud Backup?

Yes. We're a brand-agnostic installer, so we work across many systems that include cloud-upload options, not just one platform. We'll point out which storage tiers your specific brand supports during the install.

Should a Fleet Set a Routine for Pulling Footage?

It's worth building into a fleet's standard process — checking and exporting relevant clips soon after any reported incident, rather than assuming the footage will still be there weeks later when someone asks for it. That's a process decision for the fleet, separate from how the hardware itself is installed.

Installing camera hardware that keeps footage when you need it

API Signal installs GPS, telematics, and camera hardware across Georgia, South Carolina, and parts of North Carolina, set up so footage is actually there when something happens. See what fleet GPS installation costs or how this data holds up after an accident before you schedule.

Questions we get asked about this

Do you store footage for us after install?

No — we install the hardware. Storage and retention run through your telematics or camera platform's own app or software, not through us.

Can you increase how long footage is stored?

That's usually a settings or plan change on the platform side, not something changed at install — but we can walk through what your specific hardware supports.

Will an SD card failure lose all the footage?

Yes, if that's the only storage tier and the card fails. Cloud backup is the main way fleets avoid a single point of failure like that.

Does higher video quality mean shorter storage retention?

Generally, yes — higher-resolution footage takes up more space per hour, so it loops over faster on the same card size unless retention settings account for it.
