Any site quoting a single per-vehicle install price is either quoting their simplest possible job or making it up.
The same tracker takes twenty minutes on a bare cargo van and two hours on an upfitted bucket truck where a body builder has already used every accessible circuit. Both are "one GPS install."
So instead of a fake number, here is what actually drives it.
In rough order of labour:
A five-year-old cargo van with an untouched dash is the cheapest thing we do.
Costs rise with: existing aftermarket equipment (someone else's wiring to work around), body-builder upfits, heavy trucks where the cab is already crowded, sealed or vibration-rated environments, and anything requiring the panel work to be genuinely invisible afterwards.
This is the one fleets underestimate.
Twenty vehicles at one yard on one day is dramatically cheaper per unit than twenty vehicles across four sites over three weeks. Mobilisation is a real cost and it doesn't shrink with vehicle count.
If you can stage vehicles at one location, say so when you ask for a quote — it changes the number materially.
**Is removal of old equipment included?** If you're switching providers, somebody has to take out the previous hardware and correct any wiring left behind. Done in the same visit, the vehicle comes off the road once instead of twice.
**Is it priced per vehicle or per day?** Neither is wrong. Per-day quotes usually mean the installer is confident about throughput; per-vehicle quotes are easier to compare. Ask for a **realistic per-day throughput figure** either way, because that's what determines your downtime.
**Does it include documentation?** Photo documentation per unit should be standard. For government and institutional fleets it's usually a procurement requirement.
**Does it include parasitic draw measurement?** Before and after, with the delta recorded. This is the single cheapest thing that prevents a battery argument later. A correctly installed device draws very little — Geotab's GO9 specification lists 1.5 mA at sleep against 60–300 mA active — so drain complaints almost always trace to wiring choices rather than the hardware.
**Is verification included?** Every device confirmed reporting before the crew leaves site. Sounds obvious. Isn't always done.
Worth budgeting separately:
The failure modes we get called out to fix are consistent:
**Wired to constant power instead of a switched circuit.** The device never sleeps, sits at 60–300 mA instead of 1.5 mA, and flattens batteries over long weekends. The complaint arrives weeks later and gets blamed on the hardware.
**Auxiliary input on the wrong circuit.** A PTO input actually connected to a work light produces a perfectly consistent, completely wrong dataset. Fleets have run on bad data for a year without noticing.
**Unsealed connections on coastal vehicles.** Fine for eighteen months. Then a service call.
**Plug-in devices where accountability was the point.** Cheapest install, and it creates the argument you deployed tracking to avoid.
