On a work truck, the tracker is the easy part. What decides whether your engaged-hours report means anything is which circuit each auxiliary input landed on — and whether anybody actually tested it before driving away. We come to your yard, wire it to the right thing, prove it, and write down what we did on every unit.
A cargo van rolls off the line finished. A work truck does not. The chassis is built by one manufacturer, then a service body, bucket, dump body, crane, spreader or compressor is added by an upfitter, and that equipment arrives with its own wiring, its own power source and its own switches.
For telematics that changes the job in one specific way: there are far more circuits to choose from, and several of them look plausible. On a pickup, “is the vehicle running” is nearly the whole question. On a bucket truck, the interesting questions are whether the boom is up, whether the power take-off is engaged, and whether the equipment hours you are billing against are actually equipment hours or something else entirely.
Here is the thing about an auxiliary input on the wrong circuit: nothing looks wrong.
The device reports. The platform draws a clean graph. The report exports without an error. It is simply describing a work light, or the beacon, or the reverse lamp — and it is describing it consistently, which is what makes it so convincing. Fleets have run on that data for a year without noticing, because there is no alert for confidently wrong.
That is a different situation from a device that stops reporting. A dead unit announces itself in a day. A miswired input quietly changes what your numbers mean and says nothing.
On most work-truck fleets, equipment-hour data is not a curiosity. It is load-bearing. It tends to be the basis for at least one of these:

We functionally test every input on every vehicle. Engage the equipment, confirm the platform registers the change, confirm it clears when the equipment stops. A wiring diagram is a plan; a functional test is proof, and it is the only thing that separates the two.
Then it gets written down — asset ID, serial, VIN, install type, date, technician and photographs, per unit. On a mixed fleet with several body types, that record is what stands between knowing your fleet and guessing about it two years from now when a truck comes back for something unrelated.
