What Actually Makes Geotab Different for Commercial Fleets

We're a Geotab Authorized Installer, so treat this accordingly — but the differences worth discussing are technical and checkable rather than matters of opinion.

Curve logging, and why it isn't marketing

Most tracking devices report on a fixed schedule. Every 30 seconds, or every 100 yards, a position goes out.

The problem is what happens between samples. If a vehicle turns a corner between two reports, the reconstructed path is a straight line from one point to the other — which is why fixed-interval traces sometimes appear to drive through buildings. The recorded mileage is wrong for the same reason.

Geotab applies the **Ramer–Douglas–Peucker** line-simplification algorithm instead. The device keeps only the points needed to reproduce the actual path within a predetermined allowable error, and discards the rest. Corners are preserved because they're the points that matter; straight-line filler is dropped because it isn't.

The result is corner-accurate paths and odometer-grade distance without the cellular data volume of high-rate polling.

The same logic is applied beyond position — to oil pressure, oil temperature, battery voltage and seat belt use. That's what makes trend detection possible: a battery degrading over weeks shows up as a curve, not as noise between samples.

This is a real, explainable engineering difference rather than an adjective. You can go and read the algorithm.

Expandability through IOX modules

The main device gives you position and bus data. Everything else comes from small task-specific modules that connect to a dedicated expansion port, up to five daisy-chained, auto-detected by the device.

The design philosophy is that each module does one simple thing. From an installation standpoint that's genuinely useful: you fit what the vehicle needs rather than a single large unit with capabilities you're paying for and not using.

It also means the wiring is the skilled part. An IOX-AUX is only as good as the circuit it's connected to, and finding the right PTO or lift gate circuit on an upfitted service truck is body-specific work.

The device itself

Specifications worth knowing, because they affect installation:

That 1.5 mA sleep figure matters more than it looks. It means a correctly installed device is not a parasitic drain problem. When one appears, it's almost always because the device was wired to a constant-hot circuit that should have been switched, or because a bad ignition-sense connection is preventing sleep. That's workmanship, and the spec sheet is the evidence.

The operating range matters in Western North Carolina specifically, where the verified record spread runs from −16°F to 100°F.

Security certifications you can check yourself

This is where Geotab is unusually verifiable, which matters for government, utility and institutional fleets:

The FIPS and ISO certificate numbers can be confirmed against the NIST CMVP and BSI registries respectively. That's the difference between "the vendor says it's secure" and something you can independently verify — and for public-sector procurement it's often the deciding factor.

We should note we could not confirm the FedRAMP impact level from Geotab's published materials, so we're not stating one.

The open platform question

MyGeotab exposes an authenticated API operating within the signed-in user's data scope, with methods for both current-state queries and a checkpointed change feed for continuous synchronisation. Entities exposed include devices, users, zones, trips, engine measurements, faults, rules, maintenance records and EV data.

There's also an Add-In model that injects custom pages into the interface, and a marketplace of partner-built integrations launched in 2015 covering asset tracking, cameras, compliance, fuel management, maintenance, routing and TMS categories.

Practically, this matters if you intend to connect fleet data to something else — your billing system, your dispatch software, a maintenance platform. Closed systems make that a negotiation. This one makes it a development task.

Where we'd be even-handed

Geotab is not automatically the right answer.

If your requirement is primarily video with AI event detection, several camera-first platforms are built around that from the ground up rather than integrated in. If you need one vendor for ELD, cameras and tracking with a single support line, integrated platforms have a genuine simplicity advantage. And if your fleet is five light vehicles doing straightforward local work, the expandability that justifies Geotab on a complex fleet may be capability you never use.

Is Geotab secure enough for government fleets?

It holds FedRAMP authorisation with GSA as sponsoring agency, FIPS 140-3 certificate #4875 under the NIST validation program, ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certificate IS 725614-001, and SOC 2 Type 2. The FIPS and ISO certificates can be independently confirmed against the NIST and BSI registries, which is usually what public-sector procurement wants to see.

Is Geotab always the right choice?

No. If your priority is video with AI event detection, camera-first platforms are purpose-built for that. If you want one vendor and one support line for ELD, cameras and tracking together, integrated platforms are simpler. And on a small fleet doing straightforward local work, much of Geotab's expandability goes unused. We install the major alternatives too and would rather fit you the right one.
