How Is a Zonar LMU-2630 Installed?

A Zonar LMU-2630 install is three power wires, one fuse and a mounting spot with a clear view of the sky, followed by a light check. Red goes to battery power, black to the chassis, and white to ignition. This guide follows Zonar’s own LMU-2630 installation guide.

What Is the Step-by-Step Order?

1

Pick the mounting spot

Mount the unit inside the cabin, such as under the dash, away from heat and moisture. Keep it out of direct sun, rain and moisture, away from heater vents and hot engine areas, and below an internal temperature of 140°F.

2

Keep metal off the top of the unit

Keep metal out of the space above the device, because it can block the GPS signal.

3

Mount the unit

Secure it with screws, hook-and-loop strips or adhesive so it stays stable while the vehicle moves. These fasteners are not included in the box.

4

Connect red to battery power

Red connects to a 12 to 24 volt source. Positive voltage must fall between 7 and 32 volts.

5

Connect black to chassis ground

Black connects to the vehicle chassis.

6

Connect white to ignition

White connects to the vehicle ignition, not the battery.

7

Fuse the battery feed

Place an inline 3 amp fuse on the battery feed.

8

Insulate every unused wire

Insulate unused wires to prevent shorts. Avoid quick taps and exposed cut wires.

9

Power up and read the lights

Check the lights as shown in the table below. A GPS lock can take up to five minutes. If there is no signal after one or two minutes, reposition the unit and try again, away from parking garages and tall buildings, which can interfere with GPS.

Mounting rules

  • Mount inside the cabin, such as under the dash.
  • Keep the area above the unit free of metal.
  • Keep it out of direct sun, rain and moisture.
  • Stay away from heater vents and hot engine areas, and keep the internal temperature below 140°F.
  • Fasten it so it cannot move while the vehicle is moving.

What Does Each Wire on the Unit Harness Do?

The three wires every install uses are red, black and white. The rest are for inputs, outputs and accessories, and any wire that is not used must be insulated.

What Do the Lights Mean After Power-Up?

Solid orange means the unit has cell service and solid green means it has a GPS fix. Solid green and solid orange together is the ideal result.

OffModem is off
Solid green and solid orangeIdeal connection
Slow orange blinkSearching for the network
Fast orange blinkNetwork available
Solid orangeRegistering and receiving inbound acknowledgement

The unit can take 20 to 60 seconds to detect a SIM card that was installed wrong. Zonar technical support must verify the installation.

How Is the Starter Disable Relay Wired?

The starter disable relay has its own four-wire harness, and the unit’s green wire is the starter disable output. A starter disable takes effect on the next start attempt and stays active until a disable command is sent. It does not shut off a running engine.

How Are the Accessories Installed?

OBDII diagnostics

  • Find the OBDII port, usually under the dash near the steering wheel.
  • Insert the adapter until it seats, and confirm the cable reaches the unit.
  • Plug the mini connector into the AUX2 female port.
  • Connect the white ignition wire to the reserved white wire.

J-bus diagnostics (JPOD)

  • Plug the JPOD mini connector into the AUX2 port.
  • Connect the JPOD serial connector to the J-bus serial connector.
  • Insert the J-bus male adapter into the J-bus port, usually under the dash near the steering wheel.

Trailer temperature sensors

  • Mount sensors on the front wall beside the refrigeration unit, plus the center or rear of the trailer, about halfway between floor and ceiling.
  • Keep them away from cooling vents, high-traffic areas, the floor and the direct airflow of the refrigeration unit. Orientation does not matter.
  • One sensor: connect its black and white wires to the harness black wire, its red wire to White/Blue, and leave Yellow/Green unconnected.
  • More than one sensor: connect each sensor’s Yellow/Green wire to the next sensor’s white wire, connect the first sensor’s black and white wires to the harness black wire, and leave the last sensor’s Yellow/Green unconnected.

Driver ID key fob reader

  • Drill a 1/2 inch hole, pass the reader wires through, and fasten the two reader washers firmly.
  • Mount it somewhere easy to reach, ideally under or on the dash.
  • Connect White/Blue (1-bit data) to the fob’s grey wire, and the black wire to the harness ground.

Driver buzzer

  • Connect a 12 to 24 volt positive wire from the harness to the buzzer’s red wire.
  • Connect the harness brown wire to the buzzer’s black wire.
  • Stick the buzzer to a clean, flat surface nearby with double-sided tape. Do not block vents or interfere with vehicle operation.
