GPS Tracking for Police Cars, Fire Trucks & City Fleet Vehicles

Public safety and city vehicles are the most crowded vehicles we work on. A patrol car already has a radio, a light bar, a siren, a computer mount and a camera, all wired into the same few circuits. We install GPS tracking devices and AVL on police, fire and city fleets across Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Alabama, Florida and Mississippi, around the equipment already there and without disturbing it.

Fleet installs from $65 per vehicle. Testing a few vehicles first? We do pilot installs too.

What city and public safety vehicles do we track?

Snowplows, sweepers and spreaders can also record when the equipment is working. See snowplow monitoring and PTO and equipment monitoring.

How is a GPS tracker installed in a police car?

Carefully, because a patrol car's wiring is already full. The upfitter has added a power distribution box, radio power, light and siren controllers and often a computer dock, many of them on circuits that stay live with the key off. Tapping the wrong one gives a tracker that never reports ignition off, or worse, interferes with equipment an officer depends on.

Wire colors for the base vehicles are in our Vehicle Wiring Database.

What is AVL, and how is it different from GPS tracking?

AVL, automatic vehicle location, is GPS tracking used by dispatch. The same kind of device reports position, but the data feeds a dispatch or CAD screen so the closest unit can be sent to a call. For public safety fleets, update speed and reliability matter more than reports. We install AVL devices and the mobile data terminals that go with them. See CAD and AVL installation and municipal fleet installation.

What does a city get from tracking its fleet?

Proof of service for public works, such as which streets were plowed or swept and when. Idle time on vehicles that sit running at job sites. Take-home vehicle use outside working hours. Engine hours and fault codes for the city shop. For public safety, live unit locations for dispatch and a record of where each unit was during an incident.

City fleets also run fleet cameras and other vehicles we track, from heavy equipment to trailers.

Which GPS tracking brands do we install?

Public fleets run on many of these platforms, and we install all of them. Need heavy duty trackers for trucks or heavy equipment? Every brand below makes them, so pick yours and we install it.
