Who We Install For Around Camden

Where a tracker mounts on a fire engine and what has to be kept clear

Camden is the Kershaw County seat, and the fleet picture here is driven by emergency response rather than sanitation routes or utility work. The City fire department is a combination operation, 28 career firefighters alongside 18 volunteers, working two stations and covering roughly 50 square miles that reaches past the city limits into unincorporated Kershaw County, answering close to 2,000 calls a year.

A combination department is a different tracking problem from a fully career one. Apparatus is not staffed around the clock, crews come in from home, and the same engine may roll from either station depending on who is available that night. Knowing where a unit actually was, and when it actually moved, carries more weight in that setup than it does where everything sits in one bay under a full shift.

The county side is its own operation again. Kershaw County EMS works five stations plus two quick response vehicles, the Sheriff's Office runs patrol and civil process, and Kershaw County Fire Service covers a long list of stations from Lugoff and Blaney out to Bethune, Cassatt, Boykin and Westville. Ambulances carry their own rules, and those rules are not negotiable.

Alongside all that sit Camden Public Works, the Police Department on Lyttleton Street and the City of Camden Utility Department. Kershaw County has grown from roughly 65,000 residents in 2020 toward an estimated 73,000, most of it along the Lugoff and Elgin corridor feeding Columbia and Charlotte. The fleets here are growing with it.

Camden-Specific Considerations

What's Different About Fleet Installs in Camden

Fire apparatus is not a truck with a bigger body

An engine has a pump panel, scene lighting, a radio stack and battery management that is already working hard before anything else is added. Power has to be taken from the right place, and the unit has to be mounted where it will not interfere with anything a crew reaches for at three in the morning.

We wire around what is already there rather than through it, and we leave the pump panel face clear and the gauges readable. Nothing we fit should ever be the reason a truck hesitates on a call.

Ambulance install zones: cab and chassis yes, patient compartment no

Ambulances have a line you do not cross

The patient compartment is off limits for drilling and for anything that could interfere with onboard medical equipment. Everything lives forward of the bulkhead, in the cab and on the chassis.

That is not a preference, it is how these vehicles have to be treated. It also means a later service call never turns into pulling the box apart while a unit is needed on the road.

A volunteer roster changes what the data is for

In a combination department the useful question is rarely who was driving. It is which piece of apparatus was available, where it sat, and how long it took to get moving once the tone dropped.

What gets tracked and how it gets used is your policy to set, not ours. We fit what you decide on and stay out of the rest of it.

The fleet is spread across 740 square miles

Kershaw County is large and thinly settled outside the Camden and Lugoff corridor. Units do not sit in one yard waiting for an installer, and a station on the far side of the county is a real drive rather than a quick hop.

An engine, a medic unit and a patrol car are three different jobs, and none of them is a van. On apparatus the mounting point decides whether a crew ever notices the box is there, the grounds have to be clean, and every joint has to survive years of hard starts, scene idling and weather. Emergency fleets find this out faster than anyone. A unit that faults on a call at two in the morning is a unit nobody trusts again.

Questions From Camden Fleet Managers

Camden Fleet Installation FAQ

Do you install on fire apparatus?

Yes. Engines, ladders, brush units and command vehicles. The work is about respecting what is already in there, taking power from somewhere that will not cause a problem on a long scene, and leaving the pump panel and controls clear.

Can you fit an ambulance without touching the patient compartment?

Yes, and it is the only way we do them. Everything stays forward of the bulkhead, mounted and routed so nothing interferes with onboard medical equipment and nothing has to come apart later for a service call.

Can you work around 24-hour shift coverage?

Yes. A station cannot go dark while a truck is in the bay, so we take a unit at a time and coordinate with whoever holds the duty roster. Most apparatus is back in service the same day.

Will you come out to the outlying stations?

Yes. Kershaw County covers about 740 square miles and we would rather make the drive than have you bring apparatus in from Bethune or Westville. We plan a run that takes in several stations in a day.

Do we quote the City and the County together?

Separately, normally. City fire, police and public works sit under one budget, and County EMS, the Sheriff's Office and County Fire Service sit under another. We quote each so nobody waits on somebody else's approval.
