API Signal installs fleet GPS trackers, dash cameras and telematics for businesses in Beaufort and across northern Beaufort County, at the shop, the yard or the owner's driveway, from Burton and Port Royal to Lady's Island and St. Helena Island. Our customers here are trades with 1 to 10 vehicles, tree and marine crews, contractors who supply the Marine Corps bases, and fleets that cross the Beaufort River every working day.
Mostly trades with 1 to 10 vehicles, then base contractors, sea island service routes, and tree and marine crews. Beaufort and Port Royal are neighbors of nearly the same size that share Port Royal Island: the Census Bureau estimates 15,775 residents in the City of Beaufort and 16,648 in the Town of Port Royal in July 2025, each up 15% since 2020, with average commutes of 18.3 and 14.4 minutes. Short hops and many stops are the daily pattern for the HVAC and plumbing companies, electricians, roofers and pest control routes working out of Burton, Shell Point, Mossy Oaks and Lady's Island.
The Marine Corps accounts for a large share of the work. A 2022 state study tied about 6,877 South Carolina jobs to Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort and about 6,675 to the recruit depot at Parris Island. In October 2023 the Navy awarded six firms construction contracts worth up to a combined $120 million, mainly for work at the air station, Parris Island and the Naval Hospital, with completion expected by October 2028. Builders, mechanical and electrical subcontractors and their suppliers keep trucks in northern Beaufort County, and those trucks are fitted at the companies' own yards.
East of the river, the work is strung along one highway. US 21, the Sea Island Parkway, runs from Lady's Island across St. Helena Island and over the Harbor River, a crossing SCDOT has described as the only vehicle route between the mainland and Harbor, Hunting and Fripp islands. Hunting Island State Park, at the far end, draws more than a million visitors a year by the state park service's count. Builders, landscapers, pool and pest routes and supply trucks go out that road and come back the same way.
Trees and water shape two more trades. The City of Beaufort requires a permit to prune any landmark tree, so bucket trucks and chippers work under written rules here. In December 2025 the Town of Port Royal got its first look at phase one of Safe Harbor's master plan for the old port property: docks still to be built, a pedestrian promenade along the shoreline and a waterside park.
Every major platform, installed around how northern Beaufort County moves: a 1959 swing bridge with an opening schedule and a through-truck ordinance, an inspection line at the air station, and one highway to the outer islands.
Hardwired trackers on service vans, pickups and box trucks, plug-in units on leased vehicles, battery trackers on chippers and trailers, and geofences on the Woods and McTeer bridges, the base inspection line and each job address out US 21.
Forward cameras that show which bridge and which street a heavy truck used, rear and side views for dump trucks, chip trucks and box trucks backing down narrow lanes under live oaks, and driver-facing cameras on request.
Samsara, Motive, Lytx, Verizon Connect, Netradyne, Geotab, CalAmp, Powerfleet and more, with PTO and boom inputs on bucket trucks, engine hours on chip trucks and dump bodies, and crossing-time and gate-wait reports built before we leave.
Not as a through route. City of Beaufort Code Section 8-1010, adopted in October 2024, bars medium and heavy trucks that haul material, dump trucks and tractor trailers among them, from US 21 Business between Ribaut Road and Lady's Island Drive, the Woods Memorial Bridge included, and from Bay Street. The exception is a truck with business on those streets whose driver shows proof such as a bill of lading. Personal pickups, passenger vans and buses are exempt, and the fine runs up to $500. A city notice to drivers in July 2024 put the bridge's own limit at three or more axles and 40,000 pounds or more. State law lets a three-axle truck gross 46,000 pounds, so a loaded tandem dump truck or mixer is over both marks.
We put the heavy units in their own group on your platform and draw a geofence on the bridge and its approaches, so an alert fires when one of them heads for Carteret Street while vans and pickups cross quietly. The other crossing is the McTeer Bridge on US 21, a high fixed span about two miles away. When a heavy truck does have a delivery on Boundary Street or Bay Street, the stop record and the road-facing camera clip back up the bill of lading.
On weekdays it does not open for ordinary boat traffic from 6:00 to 9:29 a.m. or from 3:31 to 7:00 p.m., and between 9:30 and 3:30 it opens no more than once an hour, on the half hour. That is the Coast Guard's rule for the Woods Memorial Bridge, in effect since June 20, 2025. Evenings, weekends and federal holidays it opens whenever a vessel signals, and tugs with tows pass at any hour. Bridge logs cited by the Coast Guard show about seven openings a day.
So a weekday van leaving for Lady's Island between 6:00 and 9:29 will rarely meet an open span, and a midday trip is best timed to miss the half hour. The bridge also closes to vehicles for events: in 2026 SCDOT announced closures for a July 4 morning 5K and a Patriot Day evening event. A geofence on each bridge turns every crossing into a timed event, so the weekly report shows what the river cost by bridge and by hour, and dispatch sees which one to give the next van. We time our own visits to Lady's Island and St. Helena yards around the same schedule.
How long each truck waits at inspection, because that time rarely reaches an invoice. The air station's access page says commercial vehicles, which it defines as anything larger than a cargo van or pickup, are required to be processed at the Commercial Vehicle Inspection Lot before they are granted access, and at the gate itself when the lot is closed. When we checked in October 2026, the base listed the lot's hours as 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, closed on weekends and federal holidays.
We set one geofence where your trucks queue for inspection and another on your own yard, so each run splits into drive time, gate wait and time on the job. Dispatch sees who is still in line, and loads are timed for the lot's posted hours. The hardware goes in at your yard or shop before the trucks leave for the day.
The power take-off and the boom, so the record shows when the lift worked and at which address. The City of Beaufort's development code, rewritten in August 2025, requires a tree permit to prune any landmark tree, a status the code assigns by species and trunk size. The same section says pruning must be done by, or under the guidance of, a certified arborist to ANSI A300 standards. The city's permit form, updated in October 2025, adds that the contractor hauls the debris away instead of leaving it at the curb.
We wire a PTO input and a boom cradle switch into the tracker on the bucket truck, read engine hours on the chip truck and put a battery tracker on the chipper. With a geofence on the permitted address, one report lists the day, the hours the boom was out of its cradle and the trip that carried the debris to the disposal site. If a neighbor or the city asks what was cut and when, the answer is already on file.
Beaufort County north of the Broad River, both sides of the Beaufort River:
Shop, yard, dock or driveway, from Sheldon to Fripp Island: the vehicles stay where they park and the installer does the traveling.
Yes. Two vans or ten trucks, the installer, the wiring standard and the final checks are the same as on a large rollout. For 1 to 10 vehicles the usual plan is a single visit, at the shop or at the owner's house in Burton, Port Royal or on Lady's Island. Typical scheduling is 3 to 5 days out.
Lytx, Motive, Powerfleet, Samsara, CalAmp, Verizon Connect, Netradyne, Geotab and others. We are independent of all of them. We install the system you have chosen, and we also offer equipment if you have not picked one yet. If a prime contractor or a franchise requires a particular device on your trucks, we install that one.
Not at the Harbor River. SCDOT opened a fixed bridge there in April 2021, 65 feet high and more than 3,000 feet long, in place of an 82-year-old swing span on US 21. The Woods Memorial Bridge in downtown Beaufort is still a swing bridge, so island trips that start over the McTeer Bridge skip its openings.
Beaufort County's Lady's Island corridor program lists a new access road to Lady's Island Middle School, the Hazel Farm Road and Gay Drive project and a widening of US 21 near Walmart. The county schedule we read in October 2026 showed the school road being built through 2027 and the other two starting in 2027 and finishing in 2028. We set work-zone geofences so the delay is measured by place and by hour.
Yes, along with Burton, Shell Point, Mossy Oaks, Seabrook, Sheldon, Frogmore and Dataw Island. We work all of Beaufort County north of the Broad River. Vehicles kept on both sides of the Beaufort River go on one schedule, with the island vehicles done at the island yard.
