GPS & Camera Installer in Charleston, SC

Charleston has the deepest harbor on the East Coast and a metro adding about 40 residents a day. That combination puts pressure on drayage, cold chain and service fleets at the same time. We install GPS, cameras and Geotab telematics across the Tri-County, on site.

Charleston's Fleet Economy

Who We Install For Around Charleston

Charleston Harbor is the deepest on the US East Coast at 52 feet, with a 54-foot entrance channel, meaning the largest ships calling the East Coast can reach the terminals at any tide. Wando Welch Terminal handles roughly 80% of the port's container volume across a 245-acre container yard, running about 33 crane moves per hour and averaging 37-minute truck turn times through 29 interchange lanes.

That produces a drayage fleet with a very specific rhythm — short-radius, high-cycle runs where turn time is the metric that matters. Cold chain is a bigger part of the mix here than most people expect: the port carries 2,274 reefer plugs across its terminals, and loaded reefer business has grown 110% since 2011.

The manufacturing base feeds the same corridors. Boeing employs around 9,059 locally and announced a $1 billion 787 site expansion. Mercedes-Benz Vans assembles Sprinter and eSprinter vans in North Charleston. Volvo Cars Ridgeville represents $1.3 billion invested across 2.3 million square feet. Bosch has been here over 50 years with 1,800 regional employees, and Cummins Turbo Technologies runs a major remanufacturing plant with 700-plus. The regional automotive cluster counts more than 100 manufacturers and suppliers and 13,000-plus workers — 5.6 times the national concentration.

Joint Base Charleston adds an $11 billion annual economic impact and the largest C-17 footprint of any installation in the world. Tourism adds a third fleet type entirely: a record 7.9 million visitors in 2024 driving hotel shuttle, tour, catering and ground transport operations.

Charleston-Specific Considerations

What's Different About Fleet Installs in Charleston

Saltwater street flooding is a measurable, recurring hazard

This is not a vague coastal caveat. Charleston Harbor reached flood stage 54 times in 2024 — and that was the calmest year since 2021, still the seventh-most active in a century of record. More tidal floods occurred in 2023 alone than in the entire period from 1921 to 1958, and over 71% of all major tidal floods on record have happened in the last nine years. Projections put the region near 170 flood events a year by 2050.

For a fleet, that means vehicles regularly driving through standing saltwater. It changes where you route harnessing, how you seal connections and how carefully you ground a device. Installations done to inland standards fail early here, and they fail at the connector, not the device.

Reefer telematics is mainstream, not a specialty

With 2,274 reefer plugs across the port terminals and loaded reefer volume up 110% since 2011, temperature-controlled equipment is a routine part of Charleston fleet work. Reefer monitoring is a materially different install than a vehicle tracker — sensor placement, door sensors and power source all need thinking through before hardware arrives.

I-526 is the constraint, and it's under construction for a decade

Eastern I-526 was documented in a 2022 study as regularly experiencing extreme and prolonged congestion. A $325 million flyover-ramp project connecting I-526 to Wando Welch Terminal at Long Point Road — backed by a $195 million federal grant, the largest USDOT grant in state history — is expected to start around 2027 and run roughly three years. The separate I-526 Lowcountry Corridor West work at the I-26 interchange is anticipated from 2029 to 2039.

Drayage operators should plan on a decade of shifting conditions on the corridor that connects them to the terminal.

Hurricane evacuation runs one road

South Carolina executes a full four-lane reversal of I-26 from the I-526 interchange in Charleston all the way through Lexington County to I-77. When that order comes, everything leaves on the same corridor. Knowing where each unit is — and confirming they've cleared — is the practical use case.

Questions From Charleston Fleet Managers

Charleston Fleet Installation FAQ

Does saltwater flooding really affect vehicle electronics?

Yes, and Charleston has the data to prove it's not theoretical — the harbor hit flood stage 54 times in 2024. Vehicles driving through standing saltwater see accelerated corrosion at every unsealed connection. We route harnessing higher, use sealed connectors and pay closer attention to grounding on Charleston-area vehicles than we would on an inland install.

Can you install reefer temperature monitoring?

Yes, and it's a routine part of our Charleston work given the port's 2,274 reefer plugs. Reefer monitoring involves sensor placement, door sensors and power decisions that a standard GPS tracker doesn't — we'll walk through your specific equipment before quoting.

Do you install at the terminal?

We install at your yard or facility rather than inside port property. Most drayage operators have a predictable daily slack window, and that's typically when we schedule.

Do Charleston fleet vehicles need any state inspection?

No. South Carolina has had no required safety inspection since 1995 and has never had emissions testing. Federal FMCSA annual inspection requirements still apply to commercial motor vehicles regardless of state law.

How does the I-526 construction affect install scheduling?

It mostly affects our travel time to you rather than the install itself. We plan Charleston work around the corridor rather than through it, which usually means earlier start times. If you're tracking how construction is affecting your own transit times, historical route data from telematics is the cleanest way to document it.
