Geotab SPR-RELAYKIT Harness

The SPR-RELAYKIT is Geotab's driver ID relay kit, which lets a GO device switch a vehicle circuit through a relay, most often to stop the starter until a driver taps an ID key. Geotab requires professional installation.

What Is the SPR-RELAYKIT?

The SPR-RELAYKIT is a Geotab relay kit that gives a GO device control over one vehicle circuit, typically used so a truck will not start until the driver identifies with an ID key, and Geotab states it must be installed by a professional. On the identification table it is listed as a driver ID relay kit for a GO4v3 on its own, or for a GO6, GO7 or GO8 working with the NFC driver ID reader.

Beyond starter control, Geotab's instructions describe using the relay to switch on a third-party product or operate a vehicle function remotely from MyGeotab. The common thread is that the GO device, not the driver's key alone, decides when that circuit is live.

Which Vehicles and Devices Does the SPR-RELAYKIT Work With?

Geotab's harness table lists the SPR-RELAYKIT for a GO4v3 used standalone, or for GO6, GO7 and GO8 devices with the NFC driver ID. It replaces the earlier HRN-RELAYKIT number, has a published length of 60 cm (24 in) and comes from China. The professional install condition is written right into the listing: a Geotab Authorized Installer or a licensed automotive electrician or mechanic.

The kit's own instructions cover two control paths, the IOX-NFCREADERA with Driver ID keys and the IOX-OUTPUTM, and they call for a GO6 or newer telematics device. They also rule out vehicles with push-button start. Inside the box, the instructions list an SPR-IOXREL relay harness, an HRN-RELAYKIT white Molex harness, and both a 12 V and a 24 V relay.

What Problem Does It Solve on the Job?

Driver ID only works if drivers actually use it. Plenty of fleets fit NFC readers, then find half the trips logged against an unknown driver because nobody taps in. Tie the starter to the reader through this relay, and identification stops being optional: no tap, no start.

That fixes reporting on safety scorecards, hours and fuel use per driver. It also helps where a company needs to know exactly who had a specific vehicle at a specific time, such as after a damage claim.

How Is the SPR-RELAYKIT Installed?

Setup starts in MyGeotab, then moves to the vehicle. Following Geotab's kit instructions:

  1. In Vehicles & Assets, open the asset, go to the audio feedback tab and turn on Driver identification reminder, then save.
  2. Under the asset's Settings, open IOX & Auxiliaries and choose how the Driver ID relay behaves: forced on, forced off, or controlled by the driver key. The reminder works only with driver key control.
  3. With the vehicle parked and off, disconnect the GO device before touching wiring.
  4. Connect the yellow wire on the SPR-IOXREL to vehicle ignition through a fuse.
  5. For an NFC reader install, plug the black connector into the IOX-NFCREADERA. For an IOX-OUTPUTM install, join the HRN-RELAYKIT white Molex to the SPR-IOXREL, then mate the black Molex connectors.
  6. Wire the chosen vehicle circuit through relay pins 30 and 87a, which stay closed at rest and open when the relay energizes. Fuse every connection.
  7. Seat the correct-voltage relay, reconnect the GO device, and secure all wiring and modules with cable ties, clear of the pedals.
  8. Confirm the relay response in the vehicle. Settings reach the device at once if it is online, or at its next connection.

What Should You Watch for When Fitting It?

Geotab is blunt that this kit is not fail-safe. Never put the interrupt on a circuit that could shut down the engine or affect control while the truck is moving, because a relay fault at speed is a crash risk. Leaving the audio reminder off is the classic reason a relay sits dead after install. Use the relay voltage that matches the vehicle, fuse every tap, and do not move a relay-equipped GO device to a different vehicle; Geotab's notes say devices stay with the vehicle they were installed in.

Which Related Harnesses Should You Compare?

  • HRN-CX10S4: starter inhibit controlled by Geotab Keyless bookings rather than driver ID taps.
  • HRN-SIFUSETAP: Geotab's fuse tap harness for powering a starter inhibit relay from an existing fuse.
  • SPR-NFCBRACKET: replacement mounting bracket for the NFC driver ID reader.

What Are Common Questions About the SPR-RELAYKIT?

Does the SPR-RELAYKIT work on push-button start vehicles?

No. Geotab's relay kit instructions exclude push-button start vehicles, so we only fit it where the engine is started with a bladed key.

Why does the relay not respond after install?

The most common cause is the Driver identification reminder being off. Geotab's instructions say the relay does not function unless that audio feedback setting is turned on for the asset in MyGeotab.

Which relay goes in a 24 volt truck?

The kit includes both a 12 V and a 24 V relay, with the voltage printed on the back of each. We fit the one that matches the vehicle's system voltage.
