Zonar V4R Rugged Tracker

The V4R is the rugged version of Zonar's main tracker, built for equipment that lives in mud, dust, washdowns and hard cold. Here is what it does and how it goes in.

What Is the Zonar V4R?

The V4R is Zonar's ruggedized telematics control unit. It does the same core job as the standard V4: it captures where a vehicle or machine is and how it is being run, then sends that data to Zonar Ignition, the web platform fleet managers log into. The difference is the build. Zonar designed the V4R for construction and work fleets, and for any asset that operates outside an enclosed cab, in extreme heat or cold, or in conditions where a standard unit would be exposed to water and grit every day.

If the standard Zonar V4 is the unit for road trucks, the V4R is the one for the loader, the vac truck, the street sweeper and the trailer-mounted equipment that gets pressure washed at the end of the shift.

What Does the V4R Track?

  • Location. HD GNSS positioning using GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and BeiDou satellites, with near real-time vehicle location.
  • How the asset is used. Starts, stops, turns, braking, idling, speed and accessory use.
  • Odometer and fuel use. So hours and fuel can be tracked against the work done.
  • Geofences. Dynamic geofencing for job sites, yards and restricted areas.
  • Data sharing. Data can be passed to transportation management (TMS), ERP and other third-party software.

How Is the V4R Built for Rough Conditions?

Zonar rates the V4R to IP67 and IP69K. In plain terms, IP67 means the unit is sealed against dust and can survive being submerged in shallow water, and IP69K means it is built to handle close-range, high-pressure, high-temperature washdown. That second rating is the one that matters for equipment that gets cleaned with a pressure washer.

The casing is a hard, reinforced shell made to take shaking and shock, and the unit is rated to operate from -40°F to 185°F (-40°C to 85°C). It mounts to the asset with bolts or magnets, and it has built-in LTE cellular with 4G and 3G support so it keeps reporting if carrier networks change.

Which Cables Fit the V4R?

Zonar lists three V4R power harnesses: the V4R Power Cable (part 81313), the V4R Power Cable with EVIR (81324) for fleets running electronic inspections, and the V4R Power Cable with EVIR and Inputs (81326), which adds discrete inputs for things like PTO, a plow or a boom. The full list is on our Zonar Harnesses page.

Where Are the V4R Status Lights?

The V4R has no visible status lights. Zonar builds a standard V4 inside the sealed, waterproof V4R enclosure, so the LEDs that installers normally read on a V4 are hidden inside the case. To confirm a V4R install, check that the unit is reporting in Ground Traffic Control, or call Zonar Customer Care. For what the lights on the V4 inside mean, see our Zonar V4 lights and diagnostics page.

What Should Installers Know About the V4R?

On rugged equipment the unit is rarely the weak point; the cable run is. Route the harness away from exhaust, hydraulic lines and anything that moves, protect it where it passes through metal, and seal every entry point so the washdown the unit is rated for does not end up inside the cab. Use bolts on anything that vibrates hard and save magnets for assets where the unit has to move. Before tapping power, confirm constant, ignition and ground with a meter; our Vehicle Wiring Database has wire colors and locations vehicle by vehicle.

Who Is the V4R Right For?

The V4R fits construction, utility, municipal and work fleets with equipment that is out in the weather, gets washed down, or runs in very hot or very cold conditions. Fleets running mostly on-road trucks with enclosed cabs should ask whether the standard V4 already covers their needs before choosing rugged hardware.

When you are ready to put these in your vehicles, API Signal supplies the hardware, sets up the monthly service and has our technicians install it on site at your yard, so the vehicles never leave your lot. Call 803-513-1009 or use Get Zonar Pricing and Installation to set a date.

What Are Common Questions About the Zonar V4R?

Is the Zonar V4R waterproof?

It is rated IP67 and IP69K, which means it is sealed against dust and water, including submersion in shallow water and high-pressure washdown.

How does the V4R mount?

Zonar lists two mounting methods: bolts or magnets. Bolts are the better choice on equipment that vibrates hard.

Does the V4R use the same software as the V4?

Yes. V4R data is viewed in Zonar Ignition, Zonar's web-based platform.

What temperatures can the V4R handle?

Zonar rates it to operate from -40°F to 185°F.
