What every one of the V4's five lights means, what a normal install looks like minute by minute, and how the power wiring has to go.
The V4 has five LEDs on its face: Cellular, GPS, Status, DataLink 1 and DataLink 2. Each one reports on one job. Cellular shows the network connection, GPS shows the satellite fix and which antenna is in use, Status shows whether the unit sees the engine and whether it is moving data, and the two DataLinks show whether engine data is arriving on J1708 and J1939. Tap any pattern below to watch it and hear what it means, or play a normal start-up.
🔇 The V4 has no beeps. Watch the five lights.
Easy way to remember it: solid is settled, blinking is busy, and red on a DataLink means no engine data.
Tap a light pattern to see it
Each button plays the pattern on the drawing above, says out loud what it means, and tells you what to do.
| Light | Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Cellular | Green blinking / solid | Searching for / connected to cellular |
| Cellular | Red blinking / solid | Searching for / connected to Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi models) |
| Cellular | Orange blinking | Searching for cellular and Wi-Fi |
| GPS | Amber blinking / solid | Searching / fixed on the internal antenna |
| GPS | Green blinking / solid | Searching / fixed on the external antenna |
| Status | Solid green, engine running | Normal |
| Status | Blinking green, engine running | RPM not detected; check wiring and call Zonar |
| Status | Solid green, engine off | Switched lead likely live with engine off |
| Status | One, two or four blinks | Active without engine; moving data; storage full |
| Status | Off, engine off | Normal sleep, about four minutes after shutdown |
| Status | Single blink, engine off | All data uploaded; safe to use a master kill switch |
| Status | Fast red | Running on internal backup after power loss |
| Status | Blue blinking | Bluetooth pairing mode |
| DataLink 1 / 2 | Green, once a second | J1708 / J1939 data present |
| DataLink 1 / 2 | Red, once a second | No engine computer connection |
| Wire | Connects to | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Red | Constant battery power, 8 to 32 V | 3 to 5 A fuse close to the source |
| White | Switched power | Live only with the engine running; 0 V in accessory; 3 to 5 A fuse |
| Black | Battery ground | Under 1 ohm to the chassis attachment point |
| Green (4-wire cable only) | Chassis ground | For machines with negative-side battery disconnects |
Zonar approves only Littelfuse and Bussmann add-a-circuit fuse taps, never in a slot above 10 amps, and every termination must be fused. Where a fuse tap will not work, Zonar describes a poke-and-weave splice wrapped in tape or mastic with two wire ties for strain relief. On late-model school buses, stay off the noise-kill circuit.
Drivers do not touch the V4. It wakes with the engine, reports location, faults and inputs while the vehicle runs, uploads stored data after shutdown and sleeps about four minutes later. On fleets with a master battery disconnect, the single green blink after shutdown is the signal that the upload is done and the switch can be thrown. If a vehicle spends long stretches out of coverage, watch for the four-blink storage-full pattern, which means the unit has been holding more data than it can keep.

No. The V4 has no buzzer or tone. It reports everything through its five LEDs.
Zonar lists this as abnormal. The switched white lead is probably live with the engine off and needs to move to a circuit that is dead when the engine stops.
After the Status light gives a single green blink with the engine off, which Zonar says means all data has been uploaded.
