What is different about running a fleet in Duluth?

Gas South Arena is in the middle of a renovation. What does that do to our week?

It doubles a problem you already had. Gas South Arena seats 13,100 and has sat in Duluth since 2003, and it is only one part of the Gas South District, which also carries a convention centre and a performing arts venue. Drop that into a city of 31,873 residents and the arithmetic is brutal: a sold-out night brings in a crowd close to half the population of the entire city, all arriving inside the same ninety minutes.

On top of that, Gwinnett County signed off a phased renovation worth more than 170 million dollars covering a redesigned entrance and plaza, new seating, a parking deck and upgraded concessions. So for the next few years the district generates event traffic and construction traffic at the same time, on the same approaches.

What that means for a fleet is that the calendar matters more than the map. A run that is comfortable at two o'clock is a different job entirely at six on an event night. We build zones around the district at the install and set exception rules against them, so you can pull a report showing what an event evening costs you in drive time, idle time and stops completed against an ordinary one. The event schedule is published months ahead. Once you can put a number against it, moving those jobs to the morning stops being a debate.

Most of our work sits along Peachtree Industrial and Buford Highway. How should that be measured?

Carefully, because those two corridors carry very different work. Peachtree Industrial Boulevard (GA 141) and the I-85 frontage carry the warehousing, light industrial and corporate side of Duluth, and it is a serious base: AGCO runs its headquarters here, alongside a long list of technology and manufacturing names. Buford Highway (GA 13) and the streets off it are dense, commercial and stop-heavy, with far more independent businesses per mile than an industrial park will ever have.

A crew that spends its morning on one and its afternoon on the other will show a completely misleading average. Miles look reasonable, stop counts look reasonable, and neither number tells you which half of the day actually went wrong.

We separate them at the install rather than after the fact. Distinct zones for the industrial corridor and the commercial strip, stop detection tuned so a genuine call on a busy frontage is not swallowed into the drive before it, and idle thresholds set where you would actually act. After a fortnight the reporting shows you which corridor is eating the day, which is normally not the one people assume.

Downtown Duluth is walkable and under construction. Where does the time go there?

Downtown Duluth was rebuilt around the Town Green as a place people walk rather than drive through, and the city has kept investing in it: sidewalk and multi-use path work along Main Street between Brock Road and Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, intersection improvements at SR 120, and water and sewer replacement along Buford Highway in the downtown blocks to open the way for redevelopment.

All of that is good for the town and hard on a service crew. Lanes shift, kerbside parking disappears for weeks at a stretch, and the last two hundred feet of a job is on foot with a bag of tools. A twenty-minute call becomes fifty and the paperwork still says twenty.

Mileage will never show you that. Stop duration will. We set the thresholds so downtown time is captured as what it is, then zone it so a downtown day and a Peachtree Industrial day can be put side by side. Most fleets that do this discover the quoting is wrong rather than the crew, which is a much cheaper problem to fix.

Our fleet is a mixture of everything. Where do people usually get the spec wrong?

By buying one product for the whole yard. Duluth fleets are unusually mixed because the town itself is: corporate campuses, warehouse frontage on the industrial side, a stop-heavy commercial strip and an events district, often served by the same company. A specification that suits the vans will be wrong for at least a third of what you own.

The three mistakes we are called out to correct are always the same. Ignition-powered units fitted to trailers and towable equipment, which then report nothing for the weeks that asset sits still and unattended. Maintenance schedules built on odometer readings for machines that burn a full day of engine wear standing in one place. And cameras placed for a highway collision when the incidents that actually generate claims here happen below ten miles an hour, reversing in a loading bay or a tight commercial lot.

None of that needs separate appointments, it needs the right part on the right asset: self-powered trackers where there is no ignition, hour-based servicing where mileage is meaningless, and camera angles chosen for the manoeuvre rather than the brochure. What it does need is realistic timing, because heavy units and multi-camera work run far longer each than vans, and that belongs in the quote instead of appearing as a surprise on the day.

Duluth FAQ

Duluth fleet install questions we get asked

Will you install at our Duluth location, or do the vehicles have to come to you?

We travel to the vehicles. The work happens at your Duluth yard, warehouse or office park, so a vehicle is only off the road for its own fitting rather than losing a morning to the drive there and back. Plenty of Gwinnett fleets keep vans at one address and heavier units at another, and we plan the visit around wherever they actually sit overnight.

How long should we plan per vehicle?

It hinges on the mix, so a single flat figure quoted before anyone has seen the fleet is not worth much. A row of vans or pickups in one car park goes quickly. Box trucks, service bodies, multi-camera systems and any auxiliary wiring each take a good deal longer. Tell us the count, the hardware and the addresses and you will get a per-day rate and a firm date. Larger Gwinnett fleets get staged, so the yard is never emptier than your week can absorb.

Do we need to be on Geotab already to hire you?

No. Being independent of any one brand is the whole point of API Signal. We fit GPS trackers, dash and AI camera systems and telematics hardware across the main platforms, Samsara, Motive and Verizon Connect among them, and we are a Geotab Authorized Installer on top of that. Whatever your provider or your reseller has sent, we fit it to spec, test it and confirm it is reporting before we leave.

Can our existing trackers and cameras be moved into replacement vehicles?

Yes, and it is worth doing properly rather than quickly. The unit comes out of the old vehicle without leaving damage behind, goes into the replacement and gets checked live before we go. The trap is retiring a vehicle while its record stays pointed at the old asset, and once that has happened a few times nobody trusts the reporting enough to use it for anything.

We are moving to different hardware. Is that one appointment or two?

One. The old equipment comes out and the new goes in during the same visit, so a vehicle leaves the road once. We will also tell you honestly what can stay where it is, because camera runs and harness work can frequently be reused, and reusing them takes a real chunk out of the cost of switching.

Which towns around Duluth do you cover?

All of them. Suwanee, Johns Creek, Berkeley Lake, Peachtree Corners, Norcross, Lawrenceville, Sugar Hill and Buford are all routine, along with the rest of metro Atlanta and out across Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. Tell us where the vehicles are parked and we come to them.
