Geotab HRN-RW07T1 Harness

The HRN-RW07T1 is a tri-pin GO RUGGED harness that plugs into a machine's 3-pin J1939 data connector, giving a universal CAN connection on off-road equipment that has no diagnostic port.

What Is the HRN-RW07T1?

The HRN-RW07T1 is a tri-pin harness for the GO RUGGED that connects to a machine's J1939 data connector, giving a universal CAN connection on off-road vehicles that do not have a diagnostic port. Geotab's GO9 RUGGED documentation describes it as a 3-pin Deutsch harness carrying J1939 high, J1939 low and signal ground in the connector, with separate power and chassis ground leads.

It is 20 cm (8 in) long and comes with two wedge locks. Geotab notes that the blue connection is the one most often used for J1939, and the green connection is for certain heavy-duty equipment applications.

Which Vehicles and Devices Does the HRN-RW07T1 Work With?

This harness is built only for the GO RUGGED. The target vehicles are off-road machines with no diagnostic port but with an accessible J1939 data connector, usually found in the engine compartment. Geotab's GO9 RUGGED page also points to this harness when no matching diagnostic connector is available or when space is too tight for a bulkier harness.

Geotab publishes no make or model list, since the harness follows the J1939 connector rather than a brand. Its connected cable limit is 2 m (6.5 ft), and it is made in China. An installation guide and an installation insert are both published for it.

What Problem Does It Solve on the Job?

Plenty of loaders, excavators and other off-road machines have an electronic engine talking J1939 but no service port a telematics device can use. A three-wire install on such a machine wastes that data. The RW07T1 lets the GO RUGGED join the J1939 backbone directly, so the fleet gets engine information alongside location, without hand-splicing into twisted data pairs.

Because it plugs in line with the existing 3-pin connector, the work is reversible and avoids cutting factory data wiring, which is where intermittent faults often start on vibrating equipment.

How Is the HRN-RW07T1 Installed?

Geotab requires professional installation for GO RUGGED devices. The sequence below follows Geotab's HRN-RW07T1 installation guide:

  1. With the machine parked and secured, locate and validate the J1939 data connector lines in the engine compartment.
  2. Remove any terminating resistor or cap from the J1939 data connector.
  3. Use a voltmeter to check CAN high and CAN low at the vehicle connector, compare them with the harness, and select the wedge locks for C1 and C2 that match the OEM harness.
  4. Plug the HRN-RW07T1 into the matching connector on the machine, then refit the terminator, if one was removed, on the harness's C1 connector.
  5. With C1 and C2 seated, connect the ground lead to an existing ground point and the red lead to an existing constant power source.
  6. Connect C3 to the GO RUGGED and mount the device within reach of the harness, where cellular and GPS signals are strong, securing it with cable ties.
  7. Start the machine and allow up to five minutes for initialisation while the device beeps, then confirm the red ignition, blue GPS and green cellular LEDs are lit and the asset reports in MyGeotab and MyInstall.

Geotab's limit of 2 m (6.5 ft) total harness length applies, and because the T in RW07T1 marks it as a T-harness under Geotab's naming convention, no second T-harness may be connected to it.

What Should You Watch for When Fitting It?

Do not skip the meter check. Geotab's guide has CAN high and low verified at the vehicle connector and matched to the harness before anything is plugged in; a mismatch means no data or bus errors. Remember to move the terminator to C1 rather than leaving it off, since an unterminated J1939 network is a common cause of communication faults. Use the wedge locks that match the OEM connector so the pins stay seated under vibration. If any LED stays dark after five minutes, our technicians recheck the connection before leaving the site.

Which Related Harnesses Should You Compare?

  • HRN-RW08K1: the eight-wire GO RUGGED kit for an OEM connector that needs every lead landed by hand.
  • HRN-RW03K4-A: three-wire power only, for machines with no data connector to tap.
  • HRN-GR09K1: the IP67 rugged T-harness for machines that do have a 9-pin Deutsch port.

What Are Common Questions About the HRN-RW07T1?

Does the HRN-RW07T1 still capture engine data without a diagnostic port?

Yes. Geotab's GO9 RUGGED documentation says it captures the same engine data, because it connects to the J1939 high and low lines and signal ground through a 3-pin Deutsch connector.

What are the blue and green connections on the HRN-RW07T1?

Geotab says the blue connection is the one most commonly used for J1939, while the green connection serves certain heavy-duty equipment applications. The kit includes two wedge locks.

Why remove the terminating resistor during install?

Geotab's install guide has the technician remove the J1939 terminator or cap from the vehicle connector, plug in the harness, and then refit that terminator on the harness's C1 connector so the data network stays properly terminated.
