Geotab HRN-GR09K1 Harness

The HRN-GR09K1 is Geotab's universal rugged heavy-duty T-harness kit, an IP67-rated 9-pin Deutsch harness that connects a GO RUGGED to most heavy-duty vehicles and is required where the 9-pin port is exposed to weather.

What Is the HRN-GR09K1?

The HRN-GR09K1 is a universal rugged heavy-duty T-harness kit that connects a GO RUGGED device to a vehicle's 9-pin Deutsch diagnostic port, built to IP67 for dust and water protection. Geotab says it is required wherever that 9-pin port is exposed to the elements, and it extends where the GO RUGGED can be placed.

The kit carries four numbered mounting adapters, so one part can suit most heavy-duty vehicles internationally without knowing the exact connector mount in advance. A rubber cap is included for waterproofing, and the GO RUGGED's 12-pin connector plugs into the harness's long-end 12-pin female connector.

Schematic only: the GR09K1 takes over the vehicle's 9-pin bracket, passes the original connector through, and feeds the GO RUGGED on its 12-pin long end.

Which Vehicles and Devices Does the HRN-GR09K1 Work With?

The device is the GO RUGGED, Geotab's sealed unit for heavy equipment, agricultural machines and oil field equipment. The vehicle side is any heavy-duty asset with a 9-pin Deutsch diagnostic port. Geotab's support document describes compatibility with most heavy-duty vehicles internationally.

Geotab's harness assessment cheat sheet adds a specific pairing: Caterpillar equipment with a 9-pin Deutsch port uses the HRN-GR09K1 with the HRN-RMRCA1 CAT adapter. Geotab's harness identification doc lists the kit at 25 cm (9.8 in) with a maximum connected cable length of 2 m (6.5 ft), China as country of origin, and four mounting adapters in the box. The support document gives the electrical side: power output from 8 V to 36 V, a 5 A current rating and an operating range of −40 °C to +85 °C.

What Problem Does It Solve on the Job?

Machines that work outdoors put the diagnostic port in harm's way. Pressure washing, rain, mud and dust reach a connector meant only for occasional technician use, and an unsealed connection there invites corrosion and dropped engine data.

The GR09K1 keeps the connection sealed, with the rubber cap closing off the unused opening, and its adapters let it bolt into the machine's existing bracket. The port stays where the manufacturer put it and the GO RUGGED mounts out of the operator's way.

How Is the HRN-GR09K1 Installed?

Geotab requires professional installation for this kit. The steps our technicians follow, from Geotab's support document, are:

  1. Park the machine securely. With the GO device unplugged, remove the vehicle's diagnostic connector from its bracket using the manufacturer's method.
  2. Pick the adapter that matches the bracket. If adapter 1 is wrong, swap it: remove the screw cap, slide the connector off the terminal cartridge without disturbing the nine terminals, fit the new adapter to the notch, and tighten the cap with no gap.
  3. Seat the harness male connector in the vehicle bracket, using screws for adapters 1 and 2, or the matching 3N or 4N nut for adapters 3 and 4.
  4. Plug the GO RUGGED's 12-pin male connector into the harness's long-end 12-pin female connector.
  5. Connect the vehicle's original connector to the harness female connector and lock it with the locking ring.
  6. Secure the device and both sides of the harness with cable ties, start the machine, and confirm the GO RUGGED powers on and reports in MyGeotab, then record it in MyInstall.

Geotab's harness rules apply in full: total harness length stays at or under 2 m (6.5 ft), and the GR09K1, as a T-harness, is never connected to another T-harness. In the USA, Geotab also calls for the CARB Executive Order label in the engine compartment near the emission control label.

What Should You Watch for When Fitting It?

The IP67 rating only holds when the rubber cap is in place and the harness mates with waterproof vehicle connectors, so never leave the cap off. Adapters 3 and 4 use different nuts that are not interchangeable. When changing an adapter, do not disturb the nine terminals in the cartridge. Keep the harness and device clear of pedals and controls, and inspect them during routine service. If a warning light appears or the machine loses performance after install, shut it down and remove the device; our technicians come back to diagnose it.

Which Related Harnesses Should You Compare?

  • HRN-RMRCA1: the CAT adapter that requires the GR09K1 for Caterpillar machines with a 9-pin port.
  • HRN-GS09K2-A: the standard, non-rugged universal 9-pin T-harness kit for GO9-family devices.
  • HRN-DC14T1: a 14-pin T-harness for 2016 and newer CAT equipment, IP67 rated with the GO RUGGED.
  • HRN-RS12S2: a weather-resistant straight harness from OBD-II to the GO RUGGED 12-pin connector.

What Are Common Questions About the HRN-GR09K1?

When is the HRN-GR09K1 required instead of a standard 9-pin harness?

Geotab states it is required where the 9-pin diagnostic port is exposed to the elements. It is the rugged, IP67-rated option built for the GO RUGGED device.

How do you know which of the four adapters to use?

Match the adapter to the shape of the vehicle's diagnostic connector mount. Adapter 1, flange and screw, comes fitted; adapters 2 to 4 cover an extended flange, a flange with thread, and a thread-only mount.

Does the HRN-GR09K1 work on Caterpillar equipment?

Geotab's cheat sheet pairs it with the HRN-RMRCA1 CAT adapter for Caterpillar machines that have a 9-pin Deutsch port, and Geotab lists the RMRCA1 as requiring the GR09K1.
