The HRN-RS12K1 is Geotab's rugged battery disconnect bypass kit: a short harness and fuse kit that keeps a GO RUGGED device powered after the machine's master kill switch is opened. We explain where it fits and how it goes in.

The HRN-RS12K1 is a rugged battery disconnect bypass kit that lets a Geotab GO RUGGED device stay powered when the vehicle's master power switch is turned off. It ships as a harness together with a fuse kit, and the harness itself is only about 4 cm long.
Plenty of yard trucks, loaders, refuse bodies and service rigs carry a master kill switch so that nothing drains the battery overnight or during storage. That habit is good for the battery, but it cuts the telematics device off at the exact moment a fleet manager would like to know where the unit is parked.
Geotab lists two jobs the bypass protects: IOX learning and device heartbeats. Both depend on steady power, which the kill switch takes away.
This kit belongs to the GO RUGGED family, the weatherproof Geotab unit built for heavy equipment, yellow iron, farm machinery and oil field work. Geotab's GO9 RUGGED documentation ties the HRN-RS12K1 to vehicles where the kill switch sits on the positive battery terminal. When the disconnect breaks the negative side instead, Geotab directs installers to the HRN-RW04K4 differential harness.
The kit does not replace any earlier part on Geotab's list, and no separate base harness is named as a requirement. It works alongside whatever harness already connects the GO RUGGED to the machine. Because the adapter adds only 4 cm, it rarely pushes a run past the 2 m total cable limit, although the full chain still needs adding up.
Picture a contractor with a dozen skid steers and a pair of dump trucks parked in a fenced lot. Each evening the operators open the battery disconnect. In the morning the dispatcher sees every machine reporting from where it shut down, but has no idea whether anything moved overnight. With the bypass fitted, the GO RUGGED keeps its heartbeat going after shutdown instead of going silent until morning.
A second case is IOX expansion. When an owner adds modules for auxiliary inputs, the device needs power long enough to learn them, and a switched supply works against that.
Geotab is direct about the stakes: bypassing a master power switch carries risk, and the client has to be told about it and approve the work before it happens. Our technicians walk the owner through that decision on site and get sign-off first.

The most common mistake is fitting this kit to a negative-side disconnect, where it does nothing useful. Meter the switch before ordering. Treat the bypass lead as a permanent battery feed: keep the fuse close to the source, protect the wire through bulkheads with loom, and avoid any routing near the starter cable where a chafe could become a short. Some owners rely on the kill switch as a safety step during maintenance, so we label the bypass and tell the shop crew it exists.
No. Geotab pairs the HRN-RS12K1 with a disconnect on the positive battery side, and points negative-side disconnects to the HRN-RW04K4 differential harness instead.
Geotab allows the red +V bypass wire to be extended up to 3 m, provided the extension is at least 16 AWG. The rest of the connected cable still has to stay within the 2 m limit.
The device keeps drawing a small amount of current with the kill switch off, because that is the point of the bypass. On equipment that sits for long stretches, we look at battery health and parking patterns with the owner before fitting it.
