What Is ZTrak?

ZTrak is Zonar's small, battery-powered asset tracker for equipment and items that have no power and may sit for months or years. Zonar describes it as about the size of an earbud case, sealed to IP67 and able to track for up to 10 years at one or two location pings a day, with a battery that can be replaced in the field.

Zonar's quote tool offers two versions: ZTrak with motion, which uses motion-based tracking, and ZTrak without motion, which simply checks in on schedule, each set to one, two, three or four updates a day.

What Does ZTrak Do?

  • Checks in on a schedule. One, two or four daily location pings, chosen to balance detail against battery life.
  • Finds itself three ways. GPS first, then Wi-Fi location, then cell tower location when the sky is blocked.
  • Helps recover stolen gear. Theft Recovery Mode, turned on by calling Zonar support, pings every two minutes, and Zonar says it helps law enforcement locate the asset.
  • Hides easily. It can be mounted in plain view, covered or concealed.
  • Handles the outdoors. IP67 against dust, rain, sleet and snow, from -22 to 140 °F.

What Do Fleets Use ZTrak For?

Attachments and small equipment. Buckets, breakers, compactors and generators that move between job sites without an engine of their own.

Assets stored indoors or under cover. Unlike a solar unit, ZTrak does not need sun, so it works on gear kept in a warehouse or a covered yard.

Long-term deployments. Equipment parked at a site for a season, or assets the fleet only needs to find a few times a year.

What Should Installers Know About ZTrak?

Mounting is simple; placement is the skill. Because the first fix is GPS, put it where it can see sky through plastic or fiberglass rather than under steel when you can, and rely on the Wi-Fi and cell fallback only where concealment matters more than accuracy. On theft-prone assets, conceal it somewhere a thief would not check first and record where it went, since a hidden unit that no one can find later is a service headache. Choose the ping rate with the customer up front, because the 10-year battery figure applies only at one or two pings a day.

Who Is ZTrak Right For, and Who Should Choose Something Else?

ZTrak fits unpowered assets where knowing the location once or twice a day is enough. Assets that need near real-time tracking while they move are a better fit for the solar tracker outdoors or a TTU-2830 on powered equipment. We can supply and install whichever one matches the asset.

When you are ready to put ZTrak units in your vehicles, API Signal supplies the hardware, sets up the monthly service and has our technicians install it on site at your yard, so the vehicles never leave your lot. Call 803-513-1009 or use Get a Quote to set a date.

What Are Common Questions About Zonar ZTrak?

How long does the ZTrak battery last?

Zonar rates it for up to 10 years at one or two location pings a day. More frequent pings shorten that, and the battery can be replaced in the field.

Can ZTrak track a stolen asset in real time?

Theft Recovery Mode, turned on through Zonar support, increases reporting to every two minutes.

Does ZTrak work indoors?

It tries GPS first and falls back to Wi-Fi and cell tower location, so it can still report where the sky is blocked, with less accuracy.
