Hartsville is the largest city in Darlington County, with 7,446 residents at the 2020 census packed into about six square miles. The City's Public Services Department runs weekly residential trash and recycling by zone, a separate commercial sanitation service, and bulk and special item pickup, so there are trucks working a street somewhere in town every weekday. The Hartsville Police Department is in the middle of a vehicle turnover too: in January 2026 the City announced $360,106 in federal funding for new patrol vehicles to replace aging units, plus updated radar. Sonoco's headquarters, Coker University, the Governor's School for Science and Mathematics and a Florence-Darlington Technical College campus are all in town, and Duke Energy's Robinson nuclear plant sits nearby.

Darlington County is the next layer out. The Sheriff's Office finished rolling out 75 WatchGuard body cameras in 2019 after its first camera vendor ran into production delays and defects, and in 2024 it added Flock plate-reading cameras across the county. The Darlington County Fire District runs eleven stations and five sub-stations, with more than forty pieces of apparatus covering over 500 square miles. Add the City of Darlington, Lamar and Society Hill, and the county road and EMS fleets, and you have several separate public fleets inside one county line.

Chesterfield County is more rural and more road-heavy. County Public Works maintains county roads, signs and bridges, runs the landfill, and sends a heavy truck fleet to its convenience centers. It keeps gravel roads on a four-to-six week scraping cycle, and the whole fleet is kept running by a Fleet Management Director, three mechanics and one parts clerk. The towns have their own crews: Cheraw lost its main raw water intake on the Pee Dee River during Hurricane Florence, and needed emergency help to keep water flowing, while Pageland, Chesterfield and McBee each run their own town vehicles.

Across the Pee Dee River, Marlboro County is run from Bennettsville. In September 2026 the Marlboro County Sheriff's Office was formally presented with $868,040 in federal funding for new police cruisers, body-worn cameras, upgraded dispatch and records systems, and more. McColl and Clio round out the county. Public transit ties the area together too: the Pee Dee Regional Transportation Authority has run Route 125 between Chesterfield, Cheraw and Bennettsville since 2008, one more public vehicle type that works long rural miles.

What We Install in Hartsville

Built for cruisers, graders and county trucks

We install every major platform, including Geotab, Samsara, Motive, Verizon Connect, Lytx and Netradyne, with the twelve-volt detail public equipment needs.

GPS Fleet Tracking

Hardwired trackers on new grant-funded cruisers, sanitation trucks, dump trucks and motor graders, OBD units on pool cars and inspector pickups, and battery-powered trackers on trailers, mowers and generators parked at convenience centers and fire sub-stations.

Dash & Backup Cameras

Road-facing and driver-facing cameras on patrol units that already carry body cameras, and backup and side cameras on sanitation trucks working Hartsville's residential zones. We place cameras so the footage your records clerk has to pull is clear and time-stamped.

Telematics & Integrations

Ignition, engine data and auxiliary inputs wired correctly, such as blade-down status on a grader or PTO on a packer, so reports show real work time. We move fleets between platforms too, and handle mixed fleets running more than one system.

Hartsville-Specific Considerations

What makes public fleet installs around Hartsville different?

What happens to our tracking and cameras when grant-funded cruisers arrive?

The best time to install is the week the new cruisers arrive, before they go into service. Hartsville Police announced $360,106 in January 2026 for new patrol vehicles, and the Marlboro County Sheriff's Office was presented with $868,040 in September 2026 that includes new cruisers. Both mean a batch of new units coming in and aging units rolling out.

We fit the new cars as they are upfitted, then pull devices and cameras from the retiring units so nothing goes to auction still reporting, and so hardware you already own gets reused where the platform allows. The device record moves to the new vehicle, and your history stays attached to the right unit number. Tell us the delivery dates and we plan around them.

Can GPS prove when a county gravel road was scraped?

Yes, if the grader is wired properly. Chesterfield County keeps its gravel roads on a four-to-six week scraping cycle, and when a resident calls to say their road has not been touched, a location history showing the grader on that road, with the date and time, settles the question in a minute.

Location alone shows the machine drove the road. Adding a blade-down input shows it was actually working. Graders shake hard and live in dust, so we mount the unit solidly inside the cab, fuse the ignition tap, use sealed connectors and route the harness away from hydraulics. That is what keeps the data honest after the first season.

Should we plan installs around Darlington race weekends?

Yes. When the Southern 500 comes to Darlington Raceway, nearly 150 officers from around 15 agencies have been deployed for the weekend, and the Sheriff's Office brings in state, municipal and county help. That is not the week to have patrol units sitting in a bay.

The 2027 dates are already set: April 2 to 4 and the Labor Day weekend of September 4 and 5. We schedule sheriff, police, fire and EMS installs well clear of those weeks, and we finish with a check that every unit is reporting before the crowds arrive.

How do we protect devices on trucks that work floodwater?

Mount high and seal everything. Hurricane Florence dropped about 22.5 inches of rain on parts of Chesterfield County in 2018 and affected 75 county roads, and roads across the Pee Dee in Marlboro County stayed closed years later. That is the kind of event your road, utility and public safety trucks keep working through.

We keep devices and connectors well above the floor pan, use drip loops so water runs away from the plugs, and avoid under-seat locations on vehicles that see standing water. After a storm, the last reported location tells you where every unit ended up. If a truck does take water, we come out, test and replace what failed so the unit goes back on the road reporting.

Questions From Hartsville Fleet Managers

What do Hartsville public fleet managers ask us?

Can you install without taking patrol cars off shift?

Yes. We work shift change to shift change, or on days a unit is off, and we fit cars in small batches so your road coverage never drops. New cruisers are easiest of all, because we can fit them before they are ever in service.

Our shop is only a few mechanics. Will they still be able to work on the trucks?

Yes. We label every harness, document where each device and tap sits, and use plug-in connections where the platform allows, so your mechanics can pull a dash or swap an engine part without cutting wires. When a device needs to come out, it comes out cleanly.

We had trouble with a camera vendor before. Can you switch us to another platform?

Yes. Darlington County's own body-camera rollout was held up when its first vendor had production delays and defects. We install every major tracking and camera platform, so changing vendors does not mean starting the install side over. We pull the old hardware and fit the new.

Will the camera footage hold up for public-records requests?

It will if the camera is mounted and set correctly. We aim the cameras properly, confirm the time and date stamps match, and make sure recording starts with the ignition, so the clip your clerk pulls for a request or a claim shows what it should.

Can you fit fire apparatus parked at rural sub-stations?

Yes. We come to the station, work around the crew's schedule, and fit apparatus and support vehicles where they sit. For a district spread across many stations, we route the work so each visit covers every unit parked there.
