Gainesville runs a bigger fleet than most cities its size, because it owns its own utility. The City Auditor's 2024 review of fleet management counted 1,608 active units at the end of June 2023. About 865 of them served general government. The other 743 or so belonged to Gainesville Regional Utilities, which sells electricity, natural gas, water, wastewater service and telecom to about 100,000 customers and is the fifth largest municipal electric utility in Florida.

All of it comes through one place. The consolidated fleet facility opened in October 2013 on a fleet campus of about 19 acres, with 30 service bays split between light and heavy duty work. That matters to us because a single campus is the easiest kind of fleet to install: the vehicles come to the shop on a schedule anyway, and we can fit GPS units and dash cams during their service visits instead of chasing trucks around the county.

The city fleet also made NAFA's 100 Best Fleets in the Americas list for 2026. In the first half of the 2026 fiscal year it replaced 23 emergency vehicles, 24 light duty vehicles, three heavy duty units and eight trailers. Every one of those new vehicles is a chance to fit telematics before it goes into service rather than after.

Around the city sits Alachua County. Its Public Works Fleet Management shop on NW 120th Lane looks after roughly 835 county vehicles and pieces of equipment, with its own fuel sites and a replacement fund. We work for both governments, and for the contractors who support them.

Gainesville-Specific Considerations

What makes public fleet installs in Gainesville different?

Can GPS keep the take-home vehicle log the audit asked about?

It can do most of the work. The 2024 audit counted 15 take-home vehicles and 67 standby vehicles outside sworn police and fire, and one of its findings was that the procedures for tracking take-home use lacked enough guidance. A GPS unit records ignition time, mileage and where the vehicle parks every night. Pair that with the on-call schedule and the platform can flag a trip that falls outside it, so the log is accurate without anyone filling it in.

How fast do we need the GRU trucks back after a storm?

Fast. When Hurricane Idalia came through in 2023, GRU outages peaked at about 14,000 of its 93,000 customers, and 37 GRU line crew members worked alongside 39 mutual aid crews from Alabama until power was fully back the next morning. After Helene, outages topped 61,000 residents and almost 170 traffic signals went dark. So utility installs get planned around the storm calendar, a few trucks at a time, so no crew is short a truck when the next one comes.

Does a new fuel system change what GPS should report?

It makes the two worth comparing. The city rolled out a new citywide fuel system in 2026 to improve its data. Telematics adds the other half: engine hours, idle time and actual miles driven. Put side by side, those numbers show which units burn fuel sitting still and which ones are due for replacement on use rather than age.

What about police and fire vehicles?

We work around what is already there. Gainesville Police has about 280 sworn officers and its own unit that manages body-worn and in-car video, and Gainesville Fire Rescue runs nine stations, including the crash and rescue station at the airport. On those vehicles we fit vehicle location and AVL hardware without touching the evidence video systems, and we keep our wiring off the emergency lighting and siren circuits.

Questions From Gainesville Fleet Managers

What do Gainesville public fleet managers ask us?

How much does vehicle GPS tracking installation cost for a city fleet?

We price installs per vehicle once we know the vehicle types, the platform and how many we are doing. Line trucks with PTO or boom inputs and police vehicles take longer and are quoted separately.

Can you install during scheduled service at the fleet campus?

Yes. That is the way we prefer to do it. We work alongside your technicians and fit units as vehicles come in, so nothing is pulled off the road just for us.

Do you install on GRU utility trucks?

Yes. We fit GPS units and dash cams on line, bucket and service trucks and can wire PTO and boom inputs so the platform shows when the boom was up at each job.

Which telematics and dash cam brands do you install?

Samsara, Motive, Geotab, Verizon Connect, Lytx, Netradyne, Zonar, Azuga and most other platforms. We are an independent Geotab Authorized Installer, so the city's choice of platform stays the city's.

Can the GPS data show which vehicles to replace next?

Yes. Engine hours, idle time and real miles per unit give the replacement program usage numbers to rank vehicles by, alongside age and repair cost.
