Gainesville is built around the University of Florida. UF reported 63,148 students and 33,516 employees in fall 2025. A campus that size runs on outside vendors: facilities and HVAC contractors, food and medical deliveries, IT and security crews, all moving between the university, UF Health and the rest of the city every day.

The city also owns its own utility. Gainesville Regional Utilities serves about 100,000 customers, and when storms hit, the line, tree and restoration contractors who support it are on the road around the clock. During Hurricane Helene the state outage report showed 55.68% of Alachua County without power, including 47,685 GRU customers. At Idalia's peak in 2023, about 14,000 GRU customers lost power.

The Florida Office of Economic and Demographic Research estimates Gainesville at 151,275 people and Alachua County at 298,485 on April 1, 2025, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics counted 8,214 business establishments in the county at the end of 2025. Electricians, plumbers, HVAC, pest control and lawn companies with 1 to 10 vehicles make up much of that list.

Gainesville-Specific Considerations

What is different about running vehicles in Gainesville?

Do Gator game days close roads?

Yes. Gainesville police begin closing roads around Ben Hill Griffin Stadium five hours before kickoff on home game days. Campus vendors and anyone with jobs near the university have to plan around it. A geofence around the stadium area shows which vans were caught in it, and trip history shows which routes avoided it.

Why do utility contractors want door and driver ID inputs?

After a storm, the office needs to know which tech has which vehicle and when they actually started work. A driver ID reader ties each trip to a person, and door inputs show when the van was opened at each stop, without anyone filling in a timesheet from memory.

What road work is affecting Gainesville routes?

FDOT scheduled two state road resurfacing jobs in town to finish in fall 2026: about $8 million on Waldo Road and about $11.5 million on Newberry Road. Those are two of the main roads out of the city to the northeast and west. Trip history shows which crews lost time in the lane closures.

Does the city bus system matter to fleet drivers?

It does on campus streets. The city's RTS system runs 118 buses. Where buses and service vans share stops and narrow streets, forward-facing dash cam footage settles who did what, and it protects good drivers when a claim comes in.
