A hi-rail truck drives the road and the track, and railroads want to know exactly when it was on the rails. We wire the rail gear into the tracker, so on-track time is recorded with the location.
Fleet installs from $65 per vehicle. Testing a few vehicles first? We do pilot installs too.
Each picture shows the part that gets wired into the tracker, circled in red. These are illustrations, not photos of customer trucks. The sections below explain how each one is monitored.
Hi-rail gear is lowered and raised by hydraulics. A position switch on the gear, or the gear control signal, tells the tracker when the rail wheels are down. The platform then shows on-track time and where the truck entered and left the rail.
Railroads and transit agencies control who is on the track and when. Contractors working for them are often asked to show when their truck was on the rail and where. The gear down record, with the truck's location, answers that without paperwork. It also gives hours on the rail gear itself for service.
Hi-rail trucks are often bucket trucks, crane trucks or service trucks too. Their other equipment can be wired at the same visit. See bucket truck tracking and service truck tracking.
We meter every signal before we use it, so the tracker records the equipment actually working, not a switch that was only requested. Power connections are fused, wiring is secured away from heat and moving parts, and each input is tested with the equipment running before the truck goes back out. Wire colors for the truck side are in our Vehicle Wiring Database. See all the equipment we monitor for the other trucks and equipment we wire in.
Every major tracking platform can record rail gear signals, and we wire them into all of them. Need heavy duty trackers for trucks or heavy equipment? Every brand below makes them, so pick yours and we install it.
