Which public fleets do we install for around Durham?

Durham County counted 324,833 residents in the 2020 Census, and the Census Bureau estimates 347,240 as of July 2025, with 305,561 of them in the City of Durham. Next door in Orange County, Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Hillsborough run town fleets of their own, and the Triangle's other cities are a short drive away.

The City of Durham's Fleet Management Department looks after more than 1,600 vehicles and pieces of equipment for every city department that uses them: sedans, pickups, dump trucks, patrol vehicles, solid waste trucks, public works vehicles and heavy construction equipment. The city fuels them at three locations of its own, and the same shop inspects more than 120 taxicabs twice a year. Durham Fire runs 19 stations with more than 400 personnel, and Durham County keeps its EMS fleet running with in-house mechanics, adding five new ambulances in 2024.

Durham is changing what it drives. The city has committed to being carbon neutral in its own operations by 2040, with fleet electrification as one of the main pillars, and it reports more than 100 electric vehicles and nearly 300 hybrids in service, with police cruisers being replaced by hybrids. GoDurham has been adding battery-electric buses since a federal grant in 2018, GoDurham ACCESS runs paratransit vans inside the city limits, and Chapel Hill Transit has been fare-free for more than 20 years across Chapel Hill, Carrboro and UNC.

Weather tests the street fleet here too. Durham County declared a state of emergency for Winter Storm Fern from January 24 to 26, 2026, and a second round of winter weather closed county offices on February 2 and pushed recycling collection back until roads were cleared. When Hurricane Helene hit the mountains, Durham County EMS, the Sheriff's Office and General Services, along with Durham Fire and Police, all deployed west.

GPS Fleet Tracking

Units on solid waste trucks, dump trucks, public works and water vehicles, inspectors' pickups and pool cars, placed for a clean signal and wired to a proven ignition source.

Dash & Backup Cameras

Road- and driver-facing cameras on patrol units, refuse trucks, buses and paratransit vans, plus backup and side cameras for trucks working tight residential streets.

Telematics & Integrations

Durham-Specific Considerations

What makes public fleet installs around Durham different?

Can you install on hybrid and electric vehicles?

Yes. With more than 100 electric vehicles and nearly 300 hybrids already in Durham's city fleet and more coming, this is everyday work. We work on the 12-volt side only, use the diagnostic port where the platform supports it, and keep every wire and mount well clear of high-voltage cables and battery packs.

Can you install on hybrid police cruisers?

Yes. Hybrid patrol vehicles have tight space under the dash and a lot of upfit equipment already installed. We mount around the existing lights, radios and computers without touching their wiring, and we confirm a true ignition source with a meter rather than trusting a wire color.

Do you work with a shop that already has its own standards?

Yes. Durham's fleet has its own fueling sites, inspections and maintenance routines, so we follow your mounting and wiring rules and your record format, and we work as extra hands during a rollout or platform switch.

Can you get transit and paratransit vehicles done without disrupting service?

Yes. We work in short windows, one or two vehicles at a time, at the start or end of a shift, so buses and vans stay on their routes.

Questions From Durham Fleet Managers

What do Durham public fleet managers ask us?

Do you come to our yard, or do the vehicles have to go somewhere?

We come to you. We work at your motor pool, shop or station, so your vehicles never have to be driven anywhere to be installed.

Can you get brine and plow trucks done before winter weather?

Yes, and fall is the right time to do it. Durham had back-to-back winter storms in early 2026, so we schedule street and solid waste equipment first and finish before the season starts.

Will tracking still show where a unit went if it loses signal?

Yes. The major platforms we install store position data on the device when signal drops and send it once the vehicle reconnects, so the trip history fills back in.

Can you switch us from one platform to another?

Yes. We pull the old units, install the new ones and confirm each vehicle is reporting before we leave, so you are not paying for two systems longer than you need to.

Do you need a minimum number of vehicles?

No. A town department with a handful of trucks gets the same install, testing and records as a city department with hundreds.
