Foster Caviness, a fresh-produce distributor founded in 1902, moved into a new 165,000 square foot facility on Lowery Street in March 2025 with dry, refrigerated and frozen storage handling more than 50 million packages annually, plus ripening rooms and fresh-cut operations. It runs its own transportation arm, Foster Freight. PepsiCo adds beverage distribution.
Manufacturing persists in repurposed and expanded form. John Deere's Kernersville operation is investing $70 million in a 380,000 square foot factory building small excavators, on a campus employing around 600 with roughly 150 more coming. Reynolds American remains the legacy industrial anchor, and the Innovation Quarter has built 2.1 million square feet inside former R.J. Reynolds tobacco warehouses across a 330-acre downtown district.
Worth noting for anyone tracking this market: Gildan completed its $4.4 billion acquisition of Winston-Salem-based HanesBrands in December 2025, and local reporting framed it as the likely end of the city's corporate-headquarters era.
