Which businesses keep Knoxville's work trucks and vans on the road?

Mostly the builders. Knoxville-Knox County Planning reports another record year for residential permits in 2025: 5,822 new housing units in Knox County, 3,519 of them in multi-unit buildings, and 1,962 inside the City of Knoxville. Non-residential investment reached a record $554.1 million. That work goes to electricians, plumbers, HVAC companies, roofers, concrete crews and landscapers running 1 to 10 vehicles, with open sites in several corners of the county at once.

Hospitals, the university and the schools run on service fleets too. The Knoxville Chamber's 2024 list of major employers puts Covenant Health at 11,963 employees, the University of Tennessee at 11,197, Knox County Schools at 10,118 and University Health System at 5,387. Each one runs vehicles of its own and hires contractors who run more.

Utilities add the specialized trucks. Knoxville Utilities Board says it provides electric, fiber, natural gas, water and wastewater services to nearly 520,000 customers across Knoxville and parts of seven surrounding counties, and the board dates to a 1939 amendment to the city charter. Line, pipe and restoration crews, and the contractors who dig and bore for them, work from bucket trucks, digger derricks and service bodies with PTO and boom inputs.

South of the river, Blount County adds plants. Clayton Homes, which builds manufactured and modular homes, has its headquarters in Maryville, and DENSO Manufacturing Tennessee, which makes starters, alternators and instrument clusters there, is on the Chamber's list at 5,000 employees. Alcoa Highway, US 129, is the road that ties Blount County, McGhee Tyson Airport included, to Knox County.

What We Install in Knoxville

Set up for take-home trucks, interstate delays and Saturday closures

Every major platform, installed for the vehicles and routes Knox County fleets really have: vans that sleep in driveways, crews that cross into Blount County, and campus streets that shut on game days.

GPS Fleet Tracking

Trackers on service vans, pickups and box trucks, with a geofence at each foreman's home address, one around every active job site, and one over each stretch of I-40 and I-75 where the day slows down.

Dash & Backup Cameras

Road-facing dash cams that record the merges on I-40 and the traffic around the Alcoa Highway work zone, driver-facing units where wanted, and rear cameras and side cameras for box trucks backing into tight campus and hospital docks.

Telematics & Integrations

Motive, Samsara, Verizon Connect, Geotab, Lytx, Netradyne, Powerfleet, CalAmp and more, with engine data read from the vehicle network, PTO and boom inputs on utility bodies, and arrival reports that show dispatch what the interstate really costs.

Knoxville-Specific Considerations

What changes about a fleet install in Knoxville?

How many work trucks can go home with the crew inside the city limits?

One commercial vehicle per household, and only if it does not exceed 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight. That is Section 11.11 of the City of Knoxville zoning code, which covers lots that are zoned residential or have a dwelling on them. The same section bars a three-axle combination commercial vehicle cab, and any commercial vehicle used to haul explosives, gasoline or liquefied petroleum products, from those lots.

For a trade that sends the van home with the foreman, the driveway becomes part of the fleet plan. We install at the foreman's home or the shop, and we set a geofence on each home address so the report shows which single vehicle sleeps where. Heavier trucks and any three-axle cab stay at the yard, so we install those at the yard, and the first ignition of the morning is on record for every vehicle.

Which stretches of I-40 and I-75 west of downtown slow our trucks down?

The exits TDOT has already named: westbound at Watt Road, Campbell Station Road and Lovell Road, eastbound at Bridgewater Road and Papermill Drive, and the merges at the I-640 junction. TDOT's 2022 to 2024 probe-data sheet lists nine bottleneck locations inside a study of about 17 miles of interstate, from the I-40/I-75 interchange in Loudon County to the I-640 interchange west of Knoxville. One of its project managers has said more than 200,000 people use the corridor every day, and public comments blame the weigh stations for slowdowns and weaving.

That makes the interstate the first thing to measure. We put a geofence on each of those exits, so the platform reports how many minutes a truck spends in every stretch and at which hours, and dispatch can move the first stop of the day instead of guessing. A road-facing dash cam records the merges, where short ramps meet heavy trucks. The install happens in the yard before the first dispatch, so no truck waits in that traffic.

How should we plan for the Alcoa Highway rebuild?

Treat the Knox County end as a work zone until spring 2030. TDOT describes about 13 miles of reconstruction and widening on Alcoa Highway, SR 115 and US 129, from Hall Road in Blount County to Cherokee Trail in Knox County, in seven segments. The stretch from Woodson Drive to Cherokee Trail, about 1.6 miles going from four lanes to six, is now expected to run to spring 2030, because it sits between a steep rock cut and the Tennessee River and the walls needed more reinforcement.

The section from south of Little River to north of Maloney Road finished in spring 2026, and the first phase of the new relocated road in Blount County, a four-lane road with no signals, is estimated to finish in fall 2027. For a crew that crosses the county line daily, the zone is a recurring cost. We set a geofence at each end, so the report shows the real minutes added to every trip and how they change as each phase opens, and a road-facing dash cam records the traffic and barriers around the truck for as long as the work zone stands.

What do Neyland Stadium Saturdays do to our schedules?

They close streets around the stadium by 7 a.m. and keep Neyland and Cumberland Drives congested before and after the game. Neyland Stadium seats 101,915, and Tennessee has seven home games in 2026. The City of Knoxville's game day page says Peyton Manning Pass and the stretch of Phillip Fulmer Way between Middle Drive and Lake Loudoun Boulevard close at 7 a.m. on game days, the rest of Phillip Fulmer Way, Middle Drive and Lower Drive close 30 minutes before kickoff, and TDOT closes the Alcoa Highway ramps to Neyland Drive after the game. For 2026, UT says only pre-approved or commercial vehicles may go up Phillip Fulmer Way from Lake Loudoun Boulevard.

Caterers, event suppliers, facilities vans and contractors with campus work need proof of when they arrived. We draw a geofence around campus and the stadium streets, so the report shows which trucks entered, when, and how long they sat. Any install for a yard near the river is set for a weekday or an early morning, never a home Saturday.

Questions From Knoxville Fleet Managers

What do Knoxville fleet managers ask us?

Do you install for Knoxville businesses with 1 to 10 vehicles?

Yes. Three vans or eighty trucks get the same careful install. For 1 to 10 vehicles we normally plan a single visit to the shop, the job site or the owner's driveway, timed so the vans keep working. Scheduling is typically 3 to 5 days out, and an installer completes 15 to 20 vehicles a day on a basic GPS job.

Which GPS and dash camera systems do you install in Knoxville?

Netradyne, Lytx, Motive, Samsara, Verizon Connect, Geotab, Powerfleet, CalAmp and more. We are independent, so we install the system a company has already chosen, and we also offer equipment when a fleet has not picked one yet. Trackers, dash cams, rear cameras and side cameras are all installed on the same visit.

Do you cover Farragut, Maryville, Alcoa and Powell?

Yes, and Hardin Valley, Halls Crossroads, Karns, Fountain City and Strawberry Plains too. We work across Knox County and into Blount, Loudon and Anderson counties, so anyone searching for dash cam installation near me in that area gets a visit to the yard, the job site or the driveway.

How do we track trailers and equipment on all the new apartment sites?

Put a battery-powered tracker on each trailer and a geofence on each site. Knox County permitted 3,519 multi-unit housing units in 2025, 1,685 of them inside the City of Knoxville, so one crew may have open sites in several corners of the county in a single week. Self-powered trackers suit trailers, skid steers and generators that have no ignition to wire.

When will the Watt Road and Campbell Station Road interchange work reach us?

TDOT's June 2026 display for the West Knoxville corridor study lists estimated construction years of 2029 for the Watt Road interchange and 2032 for the Campbell Station Road interchange, both on I-40. The study was still taking public comments at that point. Fleets based near those exits have time to set up geofences and time-of-day reports now, so there is a baseline before any lane closes.
