Fort Lauderdale runs on boats. The Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance says the marine industry has a $9 billion economic impact in Broward County and supports 111,000 jobs in the county alone, with about 2,000 mega-yachts visiting each year. Visit Lauderdale counts more than 300 miles of navigable waterways, more than 50,000 registered yachts and more than 100 marinas. Behind every one of those boats is a mechanic, detailer, canvas shop or electronics tech in a pickup, often towing a trailer.

Port Everglades is the other engine. The port reported its best year ever in fiscal 2025 with 1,167,552 TEUs, 131,855,261 barrels of petroleum products and a preliminary 4,773,873 cruise guests. The port says it supplies energy products to 12 Florida counties, which puts a lot of tanker trucks on I-595 every morning. Broward County's 2025 annual report adds that FLL carried more than 32 million passengers.

The Census Bureau puts Fort Lauderdale at 188,677 people on July 1, 2025, and Broward County at 2,013,317, with 58,244 employer firms in the county. Trades and service companies with 1 to 10 vehicles make up a big share of that count.

Fort Lauderdale-Specific Considerations

What is different about running trucks in Fort Lauderdale?

Why track the boat trailer separately from the truck?

Because they spend a lot of time apart. A marine tech drops a trailer at one marina, takes the truck to another job, and the trailer sits. A tracker on the truck says nothing about where the trailer is. A sealed battery tracker on the trailer frame reports on its own, hooked or not.

How long will the I-95 and I-595 express work last?

FDOT District 4 lists 95 Express Phase 3C, covering I-95 from south of Hollywood Boulevard to south of Broward Boulevard and I-595 from west of SR 7 to I-95, at $457 million with completion in winter 2027. It includes direct express connectors between I-95 and I-595 and changes at the I-95 and SR 84 interchange, right on the route into Port Everglades. Trip history shows which runs are losing time in the work zone.

Is the Las Olas bridge closing lanes?

FDOT is replacing the deck on the East Las Olas Boulevard bridge over the Intracoastal, a $14 million job that started in May 2026 with completion expected in summer 2027. Service trucks heading to the beach hotels and marinas east of the bridge should plan for it.

What happened in the April 2023 flood?

The National Weather Service estimated 20 to 25 inches of rain fell in less than a day on April 12, 2023, and one unofficial station near the airport recorded 25.91 inches. NPR reported FLL closed and stalled vehicles had to be removed. When streets flood that fast, live GPS shows which vehicles are stuck, and dash cam footage shows what the driver saw.

Does the boat show change our schedule?

Around show week, yes. The 2026 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show ran October 28 to November 1 across six locations, and the Winterfest Boat Parade on the New River is set for December 12, 2026. Geofences around those sites show which trucks were caught in the crowds.
